10:00 AM Holy Eucharist at St. Stephen's

Dear Friends,
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
For the next two weeks, I will be taking a break from writing to you in this space in the newsletter. I’m attending a CREDO Conference in Healdsburg that I was originally scheduled to attend in 2020 (in Virginia) but was cancelled due to COVID. CREDO is a week-long conference offered by the Church Pension Group for active clergy to spend time focusing on spiritual, vocational, financial, physical, and psychological well-being. It’s a journey of the heart, mind, body, and spirit. I’m excited about attending, re-charging, and learning new things.
I’ll be back for a couple of days before I leave for a vacation to Disneyworld to celebrate my granddaughter’s 6th birthday!
The Rev. Richard Leslie will be presiding at St. John’s on May 14th, and the service on May 21st at St. Stephen’s will be Morning Prayer II with Susan Zaballos officiating.
When I get back we will not only celebrate Pentecost, but will also joyfully witness and participate in Alex Dickinson-Holmes’ baptism!
I will hold you all in prayer while I am away!
Blessings,

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
-
May 14th - Welcoming The Rev. Richard Leslie at St. John’s
| May 28th - The Day of Pentecost and and Alex Dickinson-Holmes’ baptism | -
June 11th - Blessing and naming the St. Stephen’s community garden followed by a Pride Potluck on the Labyrinth
| |
I came by campus
Monday to pickup
some sunflowers, beans,
corn and squash seedlings.
As I stood by the
long Pentecost bed
I heard a whispering,
a susurration
in the blue wild rye,
eye height and growing,
stalks waving golden,
singing to themselves
or maybe to me,
to all of us.

Garden Blessing and Pride Potluck
June 11th
(following the 10am Service)
St. Stephen’s in-the-Field, we will be formally naming and blessing the expanded community garden at 11am. Immediately following the dedication, from 11:30am - 12:30pm, we will be hosting our first annual Pride Potluck.
Please try to bring an item in the colors of one of the pride flags (but anything edible will be enjoyed!). Note: while beloved by the long-standing communities they represent, most of these flags were designed since 2010, so if you don’t recognize them it’s fine! Here is a quick glossary for unfamiliar terms:
https://www.hrc.org/resources/glossary-of-terms
| |
Some examples of potential dishes:
- A plate with raspberries, grapes, and blueberries for the bisexual pride flag
- A salad with lettuce, arugula, white radish, and black beans for the aromantic pride flag
- A jello mold with layers in baby blue, baby pink, clear, baby pink, and baby blue for the trans pride flag
- And of course, cupcakes with rainbow sprinkles can never go wrong!
Dishes will go on a long table arranged by flags, labeled please for common allergies (peanut butter, gluten, lactose, etc). The community gardeners will be donating colorful centerpieces that include green carnations and lavender sprigs.
This should be a creative, joyful chance to celebrate Pride Month as a community and engage in the enriching fellowship that is sharing food and drink with friends old and new. In this moment, it feel more necessary than ever to be clear that queer and trans people are beloved members of and leaders in our community. We hope you can come to the service, the dedication, the potluck, or all three! The address is: 7269 Santa Teresa Blvd, San José, CA 95139. Please reach out to Jessica Dickinson Goodman with any questions (650-804-9044 | Jessica.dickinson.goodman@gmail.com).

This Sunday, May 7th - Change the Story
On May 7th, the vestry has invited Yvonne Murray of Change the Story to come to speak during coffee hour. We are discerning if this is a partnership we would like to engage in -- to work with a young activist who can receive up to $10,000 for their social impact project as well as to receive education on inviting young people to our community. We're hoping Yvonne can share some more details, answer questions, and engage in some fellowship with us. We hope you come!

NEEDING PRAYER SUPPORT?
Prayer is one of those things we often think about, might feel inadequate about, believe in but might be unsure how to proceed. How we pray is sometimes unique to each of us. The Church provides help in many ways. If you find yourself in need, of any kind (emotional, physical, spiritual, guidance, etc) consider how St. Stephen's can support you:
* there is a prayer chain of committed pray-ers (who maintain confidentiality).
* tell people about your answers to prayer! and the miracles you witness, or how prayer changes YOU.
Please submit prayer requests to Rev. Karen.
