MDOT SHA Upcoming Project Activity Notice
• Where: Campus Drive at Alumni Drive/Mowatt Lane
• Activity: Sidewalk ramp construction work beginning March 21. Weather and progress permitting, all work should be complete by late spring 2022.
• Work/Flagging Operation Hours: Weekdays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional work times may be needed to expedite this work. Equipment used for construction may be disruptive.
• Motorists and pedestrians should travel undistracted through the work zone and be aware of changing vehicular and pedestrian traffic patterns.

Odessa Park Construction
Construction of the Odessa Park project will be getting underway soon, as early as next week. The contractor will begin removing bamboo, trees and vegetation to prepare the site for grading and construction of the park. Construction vehicles will be accessing the Park project via Odessa Road.

Metro SmarTrip cards purchased before 2012 no longer work
From WMATA Metro:
Customers are being reminded that Metro’s oldest SmarTrip cards are no longer accepted at faregates and fareboxes as of March 1. Those currently riding Metro or who plan to soon will need to replace their cards to travel on Metrorail or Metrobus.
Metro is installing new, faster and more reliable faregates at rail stations and will be upgrading fareboxes on Metrobuses this year. This technology investment means that older SmarTrip® cards, purchased before 2012, no longer work. More details here.

Pepco Appliance Recycling Offer for March
Pepco is offering customers $75 for a limited time for recycling their old working refrigerators and freezers. Customers must schedule their pick-up by March 31 and have their appliance picked up by April 14 to qualify. Customers can also recycle a dehumidifier or room A/C at the same time to receive an additional $25. Pepco’s Appliance Recycling program typically offers customers $50 for recycling their old appliances.
The Appliance Recycling program aims to save customers energy and money by offering a convenient, environmentally friendly option for getting rid of old appliances. Customers can also select the pick-up option most comfortable for them. Pepco offers in-home no-contact pick-ups, in which contractors pick up the appliance while maintaining a safe distance of six feet from the homeowners, or outside no-contact pick-ups, in which contractors pick up an appliance from a designated garage or outbuilding.

COVID-19 At-Home Test Kit Distribution
Limited Number of Free COVID-19 At-Home Test Kits Available for City Residents
The City of College Park will begin distributing more than 1,000 at-home COVID-19 test kits to City residents in early February. If you are a City resident and would like a FREE COVID-19 At-Home Test Kit, you must fill out the reservation request form here. Spring is a Good Time to Plant Trees
Trees provide many benefits such as reduction of cooling and heating costs, interception of rainwater, increasing property values and improving air quality. The City offers a few ways to help.
REQUESTS FOR STREET TREES
The City has a program that provides for street tree planting in the right-of-way area, which includes the grass strip between the curb and sidewalk. College Park residents interested in requesting a tree can contact the horticulturist at 240-487-3595 or horticulturist@collegeparkmd.gov The location will be inspected to determine if it is suitable.
TREE CANOPY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM (TCEP)
City of College Park property owners can apply for reimbursement of up to $150.00 annually, for approved tree(s) planted on their residential lot. The completed application should be sent to horticulturist@collegeparkmd.gov review and approval. Click here for a link to the guidelines and application.
TREE MAINTENANCE
The City is responsible for tree maintenance of street trees in the rights-of-way, City maintained buildings and parks, and on public property. Trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner.

There was 1 municipal infraction issued for the violation of the Noise Ordinance, and none for Article I, 141-1 Danger to Public Safety/Health or Article II, 141-13 Unruly Social Gatherings.

Weekly Highlights of Contract Police Activity
March 11, 2022 to March 17, 2022

3/13 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust at MD Rt. 193 and Metzerott Road. 1 warning citation and 1 SERO were issued.
3/13 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust and Window tint at Baltimore Avenue and Fox Street. The vehicle registration was suspended, and the driver was issued 15 citations.
3/14 Contract officer conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with loud exhaust at Baltimore Avenue and Hartwick Road. The driver was issued 6 citations and a civil citation for possession of under 10 grams of marijuana. The vehicle was impounded.
3/15 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edgewood Road and 51st Avenue. 3 citations and 6 warning citations were issued.
3/16 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Edgewood Road and 51st Avenue. 2 citations and 5 warning citations were issued.
3/17 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Berwyn Road and 49th Avenue. 17 warnings were issued.
3/17 Contract and beat officers responded to a call for service for a report of a citizen robbery in the 9500 block of 52nd Avenue. The victim was walking home from work when she was approached by suspects 1- 3 who pushed her to the ground. The victim advised that one of the suspect’s pointed an unknown large black knife at her and took her belongings. The suspects then fled the scene in an unknown dark color sedan.

The City of College Park Public Works facility will be open for City residents to drop off bulky trash, white goods, electronics recycling, brush, and yard trim. You must be a resident of the City of College Park and bring proof of City residency to participate, although anyone can buy compost or wood mulch during this event. Residents may also bring Styrofoam, small quantities of LED light bulbs and tubes, and batteries for recycling.
