Hurtubise Sets Example to Halt Funding to Hate Groups |

While serving as president and CEO of Inland Northwest Community Foundation (now known as Innovia) in 2017, Mark Hurtubise '66 discovered the foundation was unknowingly donating thousands of dollars per year to the hate group VDare through donor-advised giving.
The process allows donors to select a specific cause for their donation, then choose from a list of registered nonprofits. Upon looking into their chosen recipient, Hurtubise found that VDare defined America as "a white nation, for white people," and refused to sign the grant check.
Hurtubise retired in 2017, and now spends 15 hours per week dedicated to working on finance reform, including calls to ensure the IRS only approve nonprofits whose charters and activities support all protected classes under federal law.

Two Saint Joe Faculty Members Installed as Acolytes
Mr. Andy Oross '87 and Mr. Harry Verhiley were both installed as Acolytes on January 16, a step in their journey towards becoming deacons in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

Alumna in Education: Allison Chandler Dietrich |
Allison Chandler Dietrich '03 currently teaches at Round Lake High School, north of Chicago. She received recognition from her coworkers in a recent newsletter, commending the French teacher in their staff spotlight. The write-up is shared below:
"Allison has been giving French lessons to a Special Education student every Friday during her free period. They meet one on one and she teaches him the basics and he also gets to pick the topics he is interested in. She has been doing this for months. She says, “It’s honestly the highlight of my week!” I don’t know which one of them is gaining more from this experience. In addition to that awesomeness, Allison is a terrific team member. Her positive attitude is such a wonderful contribution to the World Languages team. She was very helpful with our long-term sub last semester and is always willing to go the extra mile.
Allison also organizes Secret Panther for the high school. This is a great way for HS teachers to get to know one another and to spread some joy. Allison is certainly deserving of standing in the Spotlight and being recognized for all that she does for staff and students at RLHS."

Saint Joe announced their new head football coach on Thursday afternoon in a meeting with the players, revealing that Ben Downey '96 will be returning to the sideline to lead the team again in 2022.
In a previous five-year stint leading Saint Joe, Coach Downey accumulated a 52-26 record with three sectional championships, three regional championship, two semi-state championships, and back-to-back state title game appearances in 2010 and 2011.
Coach Downey was a three-year member of the varsity team when he was in high school and played both outside linebacker and wide receiver on the 1995 IHSAA Class 3A State Championship team.

Boys basketball sits at 10-9 on the season and is 4-3 in their last seven, following a resounding 97-40 win over New Prairie on Homecoming, as well as a 52-48 win over Culver in a game that was played tight from start to finish.
The boys fell in last Friday's Holy War on Hardwood against Marian after a back-and-forth game, with the Knights pulling away late in the fourth quarter for a 69-62 win. Saint Joe bounced back with a win over Clay before falling to Bremen on a last second shot on senior night.
The home stretch of the regular season begins Friday night with a road game at Washington, followed by away games at Plymouth and Mishawaka the following week.

The girls basketball season came to a close in the sectional semi-final against a mighty Washington team.
Senior Kelly Ratigan earned NIC MVP honors and broke the single-season scoring record in the game against Washington with 583 points, passing the record formerly held by Sydney Smallbone '07. She also led all high school girls in Indiana with 89 made three pointers in the regular season.

Saint Joe hockey ended the regular season at 24-10-2, winning the Michiana High School Hockey League regular season title and earning the top seed in the MHSHL tournament.
Saint Joe opened tournament play by shutting out Riley and defeating the SW Blades in overtime, before ultimately falling 2-1 to Penn in the MSHSL championship.
The team is seeded fifth overall heading into the 4A state tournament, where they will face Carmel next Friday.

Girls swimming advanced to state following a second-place finish at the IHSAA Sectionals. Senior Jane Lloyd and juniors Jackie Dobrydney, Olivia Elston, and Cece Farrell locked up the second-place finish with great performances in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay at Mishawaka High School.
The 400 Freestyle Relay girls were seeded 24th at the IHSAA State Championship, but qualified in 16th place. They ultimately finished 15th, outpacing their seed by nine spots.
The team finished 33rd overall at the championship meet.
The boys team placed sixth at the NIC Championships Saturday, January 29. Senior Sam Sierra earned co-MVP of the championship meet, winning both of his individual events while setting NIC records in both the 100 Fly (49.51) and the 100 Backstroke (50.29).

Wrestling qualified five competitors for the regional, with Amarion Parker, Zach Kennedy, Jack Aranowski, Josh Brewer, and Brady Farrell (not pictured) making it through the sectional and earning the right to compete at Penn.
Senior Jack Aranowski finished third in the 195 pound weight class to advance to semi-state in East Chicago, where he fell to Chesterton's Gabe DeMarco.
