MONDAY MEMO
Kindergarteners Avery and Bo practiced forming letters with waxed string on the classroom rug recently.
Greetings!

Busy Riverside weekends are a part of the fall and spring seasons, helping us have a strong start and a celebratory finish to the school year. It was great to see everyone at Supportive Community Night and the East Burke Parade last weekend, and we look forward to your help with the Yard Sale this weekend!

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY NIGHT
Thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday evening to celebrate the start of the year and get to know each other and the classrooms. What fun it was to be together by the fire in the pavilion, and to share such delicious foods together as well. We are truly grateful for your participation!
BURKE FALL FEST AND PARADE
In case you missed it, here's what our spectacular new Helios mascot and our rockin' float dedicated to our teachers looked like in the parade. Thanks to everyone who made it happen, especially art teacher Elly Barksdale for creating the heron, alumni parent Ellen Moore for organizing and decorating the wagon, and parents Courtney and Eric Daffinrud for driving the truck and Tricia Bunnell for supporting it all.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
All PreK-8th grade students should have what they need to be outside during the school day no matter the weather. With the exception of lightening, thunder, or temperatures well below freezing, our teachers plan to continue with outdoor learning opportunities.
YARD SALE
The sale is Saturday, October 1 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

SUPPLIES TO LEND
If you can loan us your pop-up tent, folding tables, milk crates, or book shelves, please label them clearly with your family's name and "NOT FOR SALE" and bring them along with your donations.

DONATIONS
All donations must be brought before noon this Friday, September 30. Presorting your donations into categories and clothing sizes is essential to supporting the volunteers. There will be volunteers to help you unload and get things to the right place this Monday-Thursday from 2:45 - 4:00 pm.

VOLUNTEERS
We need you! In anticipation of a successful Yard Sale, our goal is that most parents will volunteer to work a shift or two for the event. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. You can sign up to volunteer here. Some of the empty shifts that definitely need help are:
  • Friday set up 8:00 am-12:00 pm
  • Saturday extra early final set up 7:00-9:30 am
  • Saturday clean up 3:00-6:00 pm
SOCCER FROM COACH SEAN
Last week's cancelled game against Barnet has been rescheduled for this Wednesday. Players should plan to arrive 15-30 minutes ahead of time to warm up.

OPTIONAL PRACTICES THIS WEEK: Tuesday and Thursday, 5-6th grade from 3:15-4:00 and 7-8th grade from 3:45-5:00

GAMES THIS WEEK
  • Wednesday, September 28: @ Barnet: 5-6th grade at 4:00; 7-8th grade at 5:00. Directions: take I-91 south to exit 18. Turn right off the ramp and look for signs to the school on Kid Row to the right.

FULL SCHEDULE - Sean is still working to schedule games with Kingdom East and other area small schools. If you have any insights or contacts with opposing teams, please reach out to support him.
  • Tuesday, October 4: vs Barnet at home, 5-6th grade at 4:00, 7-8th grade at 5:00

We are looking for lots of parent help with the soccer team, especially an assistant coach to work with the 5-6th grade team: check out the details and sign up here, or email Sean.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Because of the time, space, and energy dedicated to the yard sale set up on Friday afternoon, 3:00 and 3:30 pick up will be at the ramp on the west side of the house near the dumpsters (fun trivia: this is where pick up always was at Riverside until about ten years ago). Drivers will skip the cedar circle entirely, and drive directly toward the house after entering. Similarly, the Extended Day Program will be based in the orchard-pavilion area that day.
3-5TH GRADE SWIMMING
Our 3-5th graders will be swimming this Friday afternoon, September 30. After learning a bit about their swimming skills last week, we will divide them into groups for lessons. They will be expected to 1) get into the cold water and 2) try their best; please help reinforce those expectations at home so that they are mentally prepared when they get to the pool. Pick up for those students is at 3:15 at NVU, there is no Extended Day Program when students are dismissed from off campus. Other swim dates are: October 14, 21, and 28. There will be no swimming on October 7 because of our Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences.
K-8 PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT CONFERENCES
Conference meetings will be held next week, and we look forward to talking with parents more about your individual children, the strengths and challenges we've noticed already, and what you can help us understand about them as learners from the home perspective. Students, we encourage you to join the conversations; since they are about you, we care about hearing from you.

  • (6-8th grade only) Wednesday, October 5, 3:00-4:30 pm
  • Thursday, October 6, after early dismissal for K-8th grades at 12:30 pm
  • Friday, October 7, after early dismissal for K-8th grades at 12:30 pm

Elementary families: each teacher has created a sign up link to share with you.

Middle school families: please use this link to sign up for 15 minutes to speak with all the teachers at once. We find that the discussion is more valuable all together.
SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures will be taken by Whipple Studios on Friday, October 14, starting at about 8:15 am. Order forms are going home with students today. Please return them ASAP; do not wait until school picture day to send them in. If you do not want to order any pictures, simply write that on the order form and return it.
RACE BACK TO SCHOOL
Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 13th, from 3:00-7:00 pm. We hope students, teachers, and parents alike will participate solo or as a team, on foot or on wheels. You'll keep track of points earned by completing laps and fun stations.

So ask yourself, why should Riverside be more accessible to more students through scholarship/tuition aid? Talk about it as a family, what does Riverside do well as a school that you want others to know? Then use those ideas to ask your friends, neighbors and family to pledge money toward your laps, points, or general participation. Funds raised by your pledges will go directly to Riverside's scholarship program.
CLUBS OVERVIEW SO FAR
Sean is collecting ideas about after school clubs from students, teachers, and most importantly, parent volunteers. If you have an idea of an activity you might like to lead with students after school, especially during the later winter and spring seasons, even if it's only for a few sessions, please email him with the following information:
  • activity topic
  • preferred season (all year, winter, spring, etc)
  • preferred day and time
  • suggested age range
  • cost or materials potentially needed
MTB Club - now and late spring, details below
Recorder Club - now, details below
Crazy 8's Math - beginning soon with Caroline for 3-5th graders, please email her to express interest and help determine the schedule
Tennis Club - now, details below
Hiking Club - now, details below
RECORDER CLUB
K-2 Recorder Club will meet this week on Monday from 3:15-4:00. Please plan to pack a snack and have your child picked up when it ends, not for them to return to the Extended Day Program.
TENNIS CLUB
K-8 Tennis Club will meet this Wednesday at Powers Park from 4:00-4:30, weather permitting. Parents will need to coordinate transportation to and from the park. Email Sean if the ride coordination is challenging or if your child needs to borrow a racket.
MTN BIKE CLUB
K-8 Mountain Bike Club will ride again this Wednesday. We will plan to meet at the Inn at Mountain View Farm parking lot and ride the trails around there to get familiar with the Race Back to School course. Both the beginner and intermediate rides will start at 4 and end around 5:15.
HIKING CLUB
Parent Scott DesJardins (4th grader Audrey, 6th grader Russell) will be leading a hiking club for 4th-8th graders, from 3:30-6:30 on Fridays. This week the group will hike the Mt. Pisgah south trail. Scott can transport 5 additional children to ride with him from Riverside to the hike, if there are more hikers than that and he will need parent volunteers to transport. Pick up will be at the trailhead at 6:30. If your child plans to join or you have any questions, please email Sean.

Hikers should bring: appropriate clothes and footwear for the weather, water (and something to carry it other than a full school backpack), snack, headlight/flashlight.
REMOTE LEARNING FOR 22-23
As you read in our COVID Guidelines for the 22-23 year, remote learning will only be an option for students who have tested positive for COVID, but feel well and wish they could be at school. At all levels there will be no work or participation expected on the day of the positive test, or until the student feels well enough to participate. As is described in our handbook for all absences due to illness, students are expected to complete the work in as many days after returning to school as they were absent. Beyond that, the systems for remote learning are unique to students' developmental stages:

Kindergarten-2nd Grade: Reading and possible math games will be shared by communication with the parents, they may be either online or in print.

3rd-5th Grade: Lessons will be assigned via Google Classroom to include links to math, reading, and writing assignments (stay tuned for invitations to that platform soon). Interventionists will be included in such planning in order to meet the needs of their students specifically. Teachers will provide feedback on the work within a week of the student's return to school.
  • Math will include an online lesson and an assignment in the student's book.
  • Reading will be either a current novel study or a link to a recorded lesson or Readworks.
  • Writing will vary according to what is happening in the classroom.

6th-8th Grade: The advisor will identify exactly which classes the following day should be joined remotely by conferring with all teachers on the schedule (never study hall or PE, rarely electives or music, sometimes not science or writers workshop, for example), and a class buddy to bring a dedicated chromebook to each class throughout the day. The advisor will send a link and schedule to the student, the parent, the buddy, and all the relevant teachers. If internet is limited at home, the absent student should contact teachers to explain and ask what they should do instead.
