From the Board of Directors

Kylie Luark is our newest R4AS board member. Kylie moved to Casper last spring and was looking for a way to support her new community. She loves horses as she grew up in Weld County, Colorado, team roping, barrel racing, and range riding. Kylie enjoys spending time riding her horse, Wylie, and playing with her new dog, Calvin. Kylie is currently attending the University of Wyoming, finishing her BS in Psychology, and would like to complete her educational career with a master's in Speech Pathology. Kylie enjoys working with children and serving her community.

Thank You to Polly Grimshaw!

Some exciting news is happening at Reach 4A Star; in honor of the Fleming Family Foundation, we will break ground this fall to add a new addition to the horse barn thanks to Polly Grimshaw. Polly was introduced to us through our longtime supporter, Denis Murphy, and has graciously donated funds to create a new loafing shed that will give the herd about 775 square feet of shelter from inclement weather. Once the new addition is completed, we will host a celebration presenting a plaque to Polly, which will be placed on the barn honoring the Fleming Family. R4AS also received an anonymous matching donation which will allow R4AS to continue to provide equine services to our community. Their kindness permits R4AS to fulfill a special purpose while making dreams come true for many in our community. Stay tuned for the latest updates!

R4AS thanks our community partners who assist us daily, allowing us to offer an array of equine activities. This month our honoree donors are the Unitarian Universalist Community of Casper, the Moon Family, and the Wyoming Veterinarian Technician Association. Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."

R4AS has a special announcement! Casper's local Sutherland's has become a proud sponsor of R4AS. We are excited about this new collaboration and honor this new friendship as we support our communities together. We hope our partnership will impact our communities today and, in the future, providing equine services while taking excellent care of our herd.

From Abigail Nunez, OTA Student

Hello! My name is Abigail Nunez, and I am a student from Casper College in the OTA (occupational therapy assistant) program. I enjoy gardening, puzzles and spending time with my silly goats. I am in my final semester completing a Level II fieldwork rotation with Occupational Therapist, Karol Santistevan, and Occupational Therapy Assistant, Genie Hensley. Ropes & Roses Therapy Services at the Reach 4A Star arena has brought me experiences I am so thankful for and brings many giggles provided by the clients. I have met wonderful volunteers, clients and connections from the community while learning from Genie and Karol. This duo is the best example of a professional relationship, and they are so passionate about the OT profession. No wonder Reach 4A Star is blessed with so many students from near and far! My love for horses and OT has grown since I have learned about their role in our mental and physical health. Throughout my experiences here since 2020, I have grown more confident in myself as a student and practitioner. I learned I would love to practice in pediatrics, an area I did not originally plan on going into this program. With youth, you learn something new every day. For me, it is a successful day when I’ve accomplished just that. I would like to thank everyone who is part of Reach 4A Star for being so welcoming to students. The services provided here can be beneficial to anyone and it is a delightful learning environment for all. Leo is a true and loyal gelding and if I’ve learned anything from him, it’s okay to slow down and take your time!

Volunteer Appreciation Party

On August 31, R4AS hosted a volunteer appreciation BBQ made possible by generous donations from Noland Feed $200, Galles Green house $400, 1st Interstate Bank $200.

Everyone enjoyed hotdogs, burgers, and salads provided by the board of directors and staff. There was great comradery, a lot of laughter, and the sharing of stories. There were a few tears as several individuals shared their why, stories of how the horses, riders, and even the cats have had an impact on their lives. The highlight of the evening was the drawing of door prizes with, Jo Ann Williams winning the big prize of a gift certificate to the Silver Fox. Congratulations, Jo Ann.

Volunteer Spotlight:

This month’s volunteer spotlight features Jo Ann Williams. Jo Ann has been a valuable addition to the R4AS family for several years, starting with her daughter’s interest in horses and growing into the position of volunteer. Her energy and smile are infectious and can be found in several places around the facility. She is a dedicated feeder and water tank scrubber extraordinaire. It is always a treat to go to the barn after Jo Ann has been there. She is meticulous in her cleaning. When Jo Ann is helping in classes the instructor knows that whatever participant has been assigned to her is in very capable hands. Jo Ann is willing to turn her hand at any task that is required whether it is cleaning the barn, scooping poop, or helping a nervous child gain confidence to ride the horse, Jo Ann is there with a smile and calm assurance that all will be well.

Jo Ann currently spends 8 to 10 hours or more weekly at the arena, including feeding horses, cleaning the barn, and helping with classes. She shares, “Reflecting on all the experiences I have had with Reach 4 A Star Riding Academy over the years, it is near impossible to pick out a top one. I have been blessed in meeting the riders, their families and caregivers, enriched by learning the way of horses, and inspired by the dedication of the instructors.”

Thank you, Jo Ann!

THE GIFT OF KELSEY by Karol Santistevan

Five years ago, three angels came into my life and to Reach 4A Star as an answer to my prayers: Addy, Genie, and Kelsey. Kelsey was the last of the angels to join the team and what a gift she was, and still is. Her experience, demeanor, and connection with people and animals is an inspiration to myself and others who are blessed to interact with her. In her short time here, Kelsey has gotten married, became a licensed professional counselor, achieved her Masterson certification, as well as helped start our veterans’ program and day programs for populations at-risk for suicide.

I am honored to be able to call Kelsey my colleague and friend. We have shared heartaches and triumphs concerning horses, and I know I can always turn to her for help with them. Her intuition and connection with horses, actually all animals, is unparalleled and stretches me to continue to learn and strive to be more. Kelsey will be sorely missed, and I am grateful she won’t be too far away. I know there are many who feel the same. She has touched the lives of many and I am excited for her to use her gifts to help more people. If I had to describe Kelsey’s gifts in one word it would be light. Not the light of the bright sun or the glow of a full moon, but the beautiful light coming through a stained glass window that changes and dances across the room as the light from outside changes. Thank you Kelsey for shining brightly and beautifully, and know how much we all love you.

Reach 4A Star Veterans’ Program

From a female combat veteran in our program, “My continued work experience at Reach 4A Star Riding Academy veteran program helped me begin to make peace with my past and start replace devastating memories with a positive one with the use of horses. The horsemanship training gives me an opportunity to get out of my head and focus on the horse. I believe the horse has a natural ability to heal and release an energy that brings me to a state of relaxation and soothing peace. In the group session with other Veterans help me work on my confidence building and provided a safe space to communicate with each other, team build and work through some stored trauma. I really enjoy my experience with the counselors and instructors at Reach 4A Star Riding Academy”

We want to thank Casper Orthopedics Jerry Behrens Foundation & everyone in our community for their ongoing support of our veterans program. Reach4aStar.org offers services to veterans for free based on availability of funds & grant money.

First Interstate and Reach 4A Star share a commitment to the communities we serve, and on September 14th, R4AS participated in First Interstate Bank’s Volunteer Day. This event celebrates a collaborative partnership that makes a difference in the places we call home. We want to thank First Interstate and their employees who spent the afternoon with us moving mats back to the barn and doing some fall cleaning. We would also like to thank them for their generous gift of $500. Their generosity allows R4AS to continue providing therapeutic, adaptive, non-competitive traditional riding lessons to numerous individuals within our community.
