Hello Carolina,

Children often meet people through social media or online gaming. The problem is that very often these people are not who they say they are, so it is very important to talk with your children about the risks of online interactions.

Online grooming can happen even if you are in the same room as your child.

"On social media, online groomers will often target a number of young people at any one time by sending out friend requests to see who responds. Through online forums and online games, they may strike up a conversation to build a relationship with a child and ask them to continue the talking on another platform or chat privately."

The interactive components of online games make them a lot of fun and appealing for children. While children enjoy playing games online, it is important to make sure games are appropriate for your child’s age. Children can easily be redirected to inappropriate content on other sites through the chat.

Safety tips to share with your kids:

- Show them where to get help if they are concerned about an online interaction and encourage them to talk to you or a trusted adult for support.

- Spend time discussing where they interact with friends online and how and what information they share with others.

- Explain how easy it is to pretend to be someone else online and why an adult may wish to approach them.

- Teach them to never share private details which could identify them like name, school, address, etc.
