Play Pickleball With Us!

Pickleball is a court game that is a cross between tennis, badminton and table tennis. It can be played indoors or out, on a badminton-sized court with a plastic wiffle ball and paddles similar to those used in racquetball. With winter coming up, this is a great way to stay active in a safe indoor space.

We offer Pickleball on Mondays (7 – 9 pm), Wednesdays (7- 9 pm) and Fridays (9-11 am) at the Bobcaygeon Curling Club. It is $3 to participate and no pre-registration required. We are also looking for volunteers as well to help run our Pickleball games. Visit our website to learn more about Pickleball and how to volunteer!

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

CCCKL observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and recognizes the ongoing impact of residential schools and the generational trauma still experienced because of this tragic and painful history. We remember and honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. September 30 also marks Orange Shirt Day, an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived residential schools and remembers those who did not.

This year we are encouraging our staff to participate in Orange Shirt Day. We wear orange to honour and remember the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, to celebrate resilience and educate people about residential schools in Canada. If you would like to participate, you can purchase an orange shirt from an official merchandise supplier to ensure that proceeds are going back to the Orange Shirt Society and other Indigenous-supporting organizations.

You can also learn more about reconciliation through education from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. We also encourage you to explore the list of educational resources provided by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion

CEO Column: Community Health is Essential

By Ryan Alexander, CEO

Community Health is Essential. This is the theme of this year’s Community Health and Wellbeing Week, which is recognized and celebrated the week of October 16. For an organization like Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, it goes without saying that we support this theme wholeheartedly. In the community health sector, Community Care is rather unique. Most organizations like ours do not have the variety of services that are offered by Community Care. Our range of services play a vital role in keeping our client base of over 6,500 people healthy each year.

For me, when I think of community health through the lens of Community Care, I think of the important role our primary care team plays in helping people manage complex chronic conditions. I think of the importance of our transportation program in ensuring that care is accessible. Community health is running different wellness supports designed to keep people moving such as our exercise programs for seniors, walking programs, and more. When I think of community health, I think of the important role that a program like Meals on Wheels has for seniors whose goal it is to live independently in their home as they age. I think of the important role our dental clinic plays in making oral health care accessible for so many people in our community. When I think of community health, I think of all of these Community Care programs and so much more.

Over the next two months, Community Care will embark on a series of moves highlighted by our new Community Health Centre at 21 Angeline Street North in Lindsay. Our new building is a clear sign of Community Care’s belief that Community Health is Essential. Since 1985 we have not had a permanent home to call our own and this new facility will help anchor community health care in our community, now and for the future. We are very excited to share our space and service with the community. We are thrilled with how our Community Health Centre and our resulting moves will position CCCKL to continue to offer essential services to the City of Kawartha Lakes.

When you look up the definition of ‘essential’ it states that it is something that is absolutely necessary, indispensably requisite. This is how I feel about community health care, and our goal is to continuously position Community Care to offer the highest quality services to meet our community’s needs. Please take a look at our offerings on our website at www.ccckl.ca to see the many ways how we can support you or your loved ones.

During the week of October 16, we will be sharing information and resources to recognize Community Health and Wellbeing Week. Learn more about this week supported by the Alliance for Healthier Communities.
