Did you know October is National Seafood Month? Make sure to keep your eye on the Port’s social media to stay up to date on our fresh fish sales throughout the month!

It’s the spookiest time of the year, and what better way to start off the fall than with a $504,611 grant? The Port successfully secured a grant award through the Port Security Grant Program from the Department of Homeland Security. The grant will assist the Port with its emergency preparedness and outreach with our regional first responders.

If that piqued your curiosity, then you will love learning about a ship's journey to the Port in this month's Currents. A cargo ship travels the international seas only to reach our Port after traversing under three different bridges in order to offload or load cargo.

And October would not be the same without our annual PortFest! Kick-off the month with this free community event on Saturday, Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.! Don't forget that the Rock the Dock series continues at the Port through Nov. 4, so make sure to arrive early and mark your spot.

Remember to stay safe and keep our waterfront clean this fall season!

Warm Regards,

Kristine A. Zortman

Ship's Journey to PRC

A ship's journey to the Port

You may wonder what’s involved in a ship’s journey to our Port – it’s not always smooth sailing! Regardless of the cargo ship's origin or destination, ships must travel through the San Francisco Bay and under the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the San Mateo Bridge before arriving or departing at the Port of Redwood City. Ship captains are responsible for understanding bridge height clearance, water traffic patterns, tidal action, channel depth and more. These factors are all critical pieces to a ship’s journey.

Port of Redwood City awarded 2023 Port Security Grant

The Port received a $504,611 grant in the 2023 Port Security Grant Program, from the Department of Homeland Security. The award is part of the annual Port Security Grant Program (PSGP), which is designed to protect critical port infrastructure from threats that could impact public safety, supply chain disruption, cyber threats or other security challenges.

Since 2018, the Port has received over $6 million in PSGP grant awards. This year’s allocation will further the Port’s operational efficiencies by helping with security equipment maintenance, backup generators for business continuity during electrical grid interruptions, exercise support and for police marine unit support.

Port authorities across the nation received $35.2 million in funding this year with the Port being one of 27 American Association of Port Authorities members to receive a grant.

October is National Seafood Month

Here at the Port, we love seafood, so what better way to celebrate than dedicating a whole month to it! In fact, we love seafood so much, that we have a whole dock just for it. Our F Dock, located at 459 Seaport Court, hosts fresh fish sales throughout the year. We have different fish vendors, such as Mary Beth Fisheries, come on the weekends and sell their fresh catches to the public.

Make sure to follow our social media platforms to stay in the loop on when our fresh fish sales are happening!
