Dear Farm Friends,

Mountain Bounty farmer profile of the week: Sean Mooney, 43.

How did you get into farming?

I’ve been farming for 16 years, and it’s still fresh every season. With farming I’ve experienced so much variety at different farms with different soils, climates, and techniques. I first got interested while working at farmers markets in the bay area and got exposed to local farmers and fresh delicious vegetables, that was really inspiring.

After that, I moved to Lake County with my parents on a 10 acre property and started growing vegetables and planting fruit trees. Six years into that I realized I needed more farming education so I went to work on a series of farms including two more of my own farming projects. Eventually, I was again ready to work with a larger group, and a friend who lived in the area told me about the opportunity at Mountain Bounty. I started here last season.

What is your role here?

My title is Tractor Operator and Irrigation Specialist. I run our drip irrigation systems, do field preparation with tractors, and all of our field seeding (where seeds are planted directly into the field vs started in the greenhouse). I support Cory our field manager and Abby our harvest manager, taking the lead when needed. Now in my second year here I feel more grounded in our planning process, I know where things are going to be planted, timing, and I’m overall more familiar with the systems.

This year has been a lot hotter and we’ve got a smaller crew. It’s been very taxing. But I swim in the river every day, that’s really replenishing. And everyone who works here is so wonderful. I appreciate our collaborative decision making, relying on each other. There is a lot of trust among our crew, and I think that is modeled by your approach of giving us responsibility and trusting us.

What else should we know about you?

The farm crew can bring out the performer in me, which is very fulfilling. I’ve been know to sing.

And I have an alter-ego...um... dog, named Meesh who is hanging out in the shade right now, she’s a farm fixture, and an Olympic level gopher catcher.

A note about box returns!

There are a few things we ask our members to do so we can continue to reuse the boxes efficiently:

  1. Remove the fruit from your boxes immediately so the fruit does not stain the box (plus it keeps longer outside of the plastic shell).
  2. Store your Fruit Share box inside until you return it
  3. If your box is torn or stained, please do not return it and instead place it in your recycling bin. Both farms are using crew time to manage the box return program, so we'd love to only deal with boxes that can truly be reused.

Thanks for your support!

Recipes, storage tips, inspiration and nutrition information:

  • I'm going to leave this one here for one more week... It's that good, and small box customers are getting their first Shishitos this week! Learn how to make Blistered Shishito Peppers (Click here) in a skillet! You'll just need Shishito Peppers, olive oil, and this simple recipe. Appetizers don't get any easier or more fresh.

  • Once the Tomatoes start rolling in I like to make this simple Pico De Gallo (Click here). Pro tip: I throw all the ingredients in the food processor to cut down on chopping time!
