She did it! NLMS president Christina Corcoran single-handedly revived the JIBBOOM whale boat float for last Sunday's St. Patrick's Day Parade! Christina & family already are planning for 2024... Photo, above: courtesy the NL Parade Committee. Photo, below: vintage game board in the Shop.

JIBBOOM CLUB #1

At our season's first Jibboom Jonathan Waters & Emilie Waters Harris, of Thimble Island Shellfish Inc, Stony Creek, CT, will present a talk on the past, present, and future of oystering in Connecticut.

Jonathan Waters resurrected the oyster beds in the Thimble Islands in the early eighties, on the old Elijah Ball grounds, continuing an historic enterprise that had been operating since the 1700s. Jonathan, and his daughter Emilie, represent the cross over of traditional oyster cultivation to contemporary methods of cage culture of the present day. The talk will be an informal discussion of the history of these methods and the oyster industry and the present technologies at use today. We will also look to the future of shellfish farming. Included in the talk will be how the boats evolved with the developments in fishing, and aquaculture technologies from the 1700s to the present.

Jibboom Club #1 meets the third Tuesday of the month with a speaker, good fellowship, and coffee. It's fun. Please come and bring a friend.

Sponsored by the Maco Family Fund.

Beyond Library Stacks

The Frank L McGuire Maritime Research Library, on the 2nd floor of the Custom House Maritime Museum, is always active. Librarian Brian Rogers, a steamboat fan, wrote about the Golden Age of Steamboat Travel for The Broadsheet, photo, above top. Head Librarian Laurie Deredita provided illustrations for a Block Island Times article: Block Island, March 1905: End of the line for the Spartan Steamship. Photo, above, Frank L. This week at the Custom House...

Our March board meeting was Thursday -- and in relating the month's news to our trustees, I realized that there are a number of individuals doing all the crazy things they love best at the custom house.

Out front is Christina, who -- with parades and Open Mic -- invariably comes through with a cheerful, friendly face for NLMS.

Photographer Marlin Blothe lives on Fishers Island. She, too, is a member of our tribe; we often share her images of Race Rock lighthouse in the weekly blast. At 8:30 Saturday morning Marlin emailed a photo of the USCG Eagle just passing Race Rock (see below) -- prompting us to refocus the HarborCam and catch the ship as she glided into Ft. Trumbull.

We lost our first NL HarborCam over a year ago when the museum flagpole fall down in a storm. The new model has its own gaggle of fans, many of whom contributed to the replacement. They frequently pass along suggestions for the view. Tips, like catching the Eagle, are much appreciated.

Is there something you'd like to try at the museum, or have you a suggestion to pass along? Please send an email. I'd love to hear it.
