BHNA Helps Students Build Mini Skateboard Ramps at Horace Mann’s STEAM Fair
|
By Theresa J. Marino
On Thursday, April 28, the Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association (BHNA) and Rose Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA) teamed up with Long Beach Skate to co-sponsor the Mini Skateboard Ramp Assembly Booth at Horace Mann Elementary School’s STEAM Fair. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.
The fair was held from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. and featured many tables and booths with fun learning opportunities for the students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. The fair was attended by parents, siblings, grandparents, other family members, and friends. There was plenty of food and lots of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Bluff Heights 4th of July Block Party Returns!
We all have memories of celebrating the 4th of July with friends and family. It’s a day to celebrate our freedom from King George, when the 13 original colonies severed all political ties to Great Britain and formed a new nation. It’s a day to reflect on our rule of law and the freedoms inherent in our Declaration of Independence, our Constitution, and our traditions.
Did you know that John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, that Independence Day “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, … Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.” Very prophetic!

Compound: A Sanctuary for Art, Wellness, and Community
Long Beach is a city that truly has it all: beautiful beaches, a bustling downtown, many diverse neighborhoods, historical landmarks, a range of independent and family-owned shops, several museums and art galleries (and hundreds of public murals), delicious cuisines representing multiple cultures, a robust music scene, and much more. And the best part? There’s always something new that takes me by surprise. In this case, it’s an art and wellness complex nestled in the Zaferia neighborhood.

A PANDEMIC ADVENTURE
Queen of the Night: Springtime in the Fall
In an out-of-the way corner of our garden, an old rose cane trellis hugs gangly ribbons of cactus close to a weathered fence in an attempt to confine sprawl and fend off critters that have a taste for flowers and succulent greenery.

The Sweetness of Sharing
Many of you around the neighborhood may not know my name or my face (unless you know Coconut and Casper, my cattle dog and her brother). But many of you know my house because we frequently put organic limes, lemons, and bitter oranges in a bag on our sidewalk in front of our yellow Orizaba Avenue Craftsman.
