Nancy’s Notes - #42

Dear Friends,

Are you stressed? That’s probably a stupid question. All of us are stressed to some degree. The question is, how do we deal with stress? Do we remember that Jesus is the Prince of Peace? I have found that “Prince of Peace” is not just a title for Jesus, but also a blessed truth.
We read in John 14:6 that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Later in the same chapter, we see some of Jesus’ last words to His disciples before He is arrested. He promises that we will never be alone. The NRSV translates vs. 18 as “I will not leave you orphaned…” The RSV says, “I will not leave you desolate...” The KJV says, “I will not leave you comfortless…” Friends, that is good news! Later on in verses 25-27, we read about the promised coming of the Holy Spirit – we will not be alone! We often hear vs. 27 at funerals, but it is a promise we can claim each and every day of our lives: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”
In the midst of all the stresses of life, may we each remember the precious promise of peace our Lord offers. Go tell those who don’t know that this peace can be theirs, too.
With You in the Lenten Journey,
                               Nancy

NEW- Moving forward with an in-person Annual Conference
The Conference Sessions Committee continues to plan for an in-person Annual Conference to be held later this spring on June 2-4 at the SRC Arena in Syracuse.

This will be the first time in three years Conference clergy and lay members have been able to meet in this way. As part of these preparations, the Sessions Committee is exploring safety and hygiene practices to ensure the health and comfort of participants. Comments and suggestions offered by Conference members in a recent survey have provided the Sessions Committee with insight and inspiration.

Click here to learn the safety and comfort practices that will be in place at the Annual Conference and to also learn why it is not legal for this Conference to be held in a hybrid format.
A note from the Board of Laity of the UNYAC
In preparation for our annual Laity Session during Annual Conference in June, 2022 we would like to share those moments in all of our churches across our conference of "The Church Being the Church". How did you reach out to your families/communities over the pandemic? If you have any pictures and would like to share them for a presentation during the Laity Session, please email them to Brenda Shelmidine at [email protected] by Friday, April 8th. Please note in the email what church and district you are from. Thank you so much for being the hands and feet of Christ.
NEW- Disaffiliating from the UNY Conference and the UMC

During the Upper New York (UNY) Annual Conference held virtually in June of 2021, the body passed Resolution UNYAC2021.7 which created a Study Commission to examine the readiness in the UNYUMC for the Implementation of the Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace through Separation.

Last fall, the UNY Study Commission issued surveys to clergy and congregations in the UNY Conference about the Protocol. Despite there only being a 30 percent response rate, some congregations and clergy did report that if the Protocol passes, they will leave the United Methodist Church. Click here to read the survey report.

Earlier this month, the Global Methodist Church announced that it will launch on May 1, 2022. Click here to read the announcement.

Given these changes, the Conference Board of Trustees anticipated there would be congregations who might now desire to explore disaffiliation.

Click here to read an article that outlines the disaffiliation process.
Kept those reports coming!

NEW- From attending a Bible study to becoming a pastor

The UNY Conference Communications team sent out a call-out in early March, seeking stories about members stepping into leadership roles for the first time at local churches. Pastor Maryellen Moore of Middleburgh UMC sent in a story about Teresa Howard.

Looking for a spiritual home, Teresa started attending “A Deeper Look” women’s Bible study that Pastor Moore was providing for the Warnerville and Middleburgh communities. During one session, Teresa shared a story about her own childhood desire to, one day, become a pastor.

Pastor Moore asked Terea if she wanted to study and work toward that dream. She said “yes!” Last month, Teresa became a member of Middleburgh UMC. Her zest for learning is contagious to Pastor Moore and to the members of both the Middleburgh UMC and Warnerville UMC.

Teresa will be taking the Course of Study to become a Licensed Local Pastor in the fall.

Resources
Lenten study on anti-racism
General Commission on Religion and Race is offering online Lenten resources for purchase. "Faithful Lent: Connecting the Practices of Lent and Anti-racism", is a small group resource to help make connections between the traditions of Lent and the work of anti-racism. This curriculum is available to buy and download. Click here.
Lenten resources
The season of Lent is essential for those who truly seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Because a part of what we learn in this time of self-examination is that we are what might be most in need of transformation. We might find that what might need to grow in faith and discipleship is the church and that the transformation of the world begins with building bridges and gathering up rather than with condemnation. NEW- Dismantling racism resource: Raising children to be anti-racist

In a thought-provoking article about how she raises her children to be anti-racist, Liz Shadbolt explained how White Christians need to move from being non-racist to anti-racist.

She urged parents to work to surround their children with books, people, experiences, and media that reflect the many races and cultures of our community and for families to have the courage to tackle difficult conversations, and to identify areas of privilege.

She said, “This is the work of knowing better so that we can do better.
This is the work of doing no harm and staying in to enter into discomfort love with God. This is the work that leads us to doing good.”

Click here to read the full article, where Liz also explained how John Wesley’s three rules are so fitting for anti-racist work.
Focusing on discipleship
The mission of the United Methodist Church is creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. So, what is a disciple?

The Upper New York Conference has updated our website to better highlight the focus of our Conference—the tab for “our focus” is on our homepage— https://www.unyumc.org. In this section we list six characteristics that define a disciple of Jesus Christ. Click here to read “Our Focus.”

Another great resource to learn more about creating disciples is the See all the People website, which is a movement to “stop fixing our church and start seeing all the people Christ calls us to reach.” #Seealllthepeople has dozens of resources on creating intentional discipleship systems and methods of building relationships.

Additional training steps will be provided over time. Imagine what God will do as more and more churches develop their process for Making Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World!
Critical race theory and what Christians should know

Critical Race Theory (CRT) examines how laws in the United States have built and supported racial inequities. It is an ideological framework that names race as a social construct and asserts racialized inequities in society are fostered by historic and current systemic, institutional, and legal policies and practices.

We are witnesses: Easter worship series

The season after Easter is where we consider what it means to walk with Jesus into eternity. But it is not about life after death, or rather not only about life after death. It is very much about life before death, life in the face of death. It is about life and about bearing witness to a life that resembles a kin-dom existence right here and right now. It is this life, this justice and righteousness, this hope and this glory to which we can say with confidence, “We are witnesses.”

NEW- Ideas for including deaf and hard of hearing in worship

UM News recently published an article entitled, “Stop yelling! I still can’t hear you.” The article described how Zoom technology and livestreaming that arose out of the pandemic, helped people enjoy a better worship experience. Can a lay servant wear a robe in the pulpit? What countries have United Methodist churches? Do apportionments help pay for church camps? How do you get to heaven?

These are only a handful of the thousands of questions received by Ask The UMC, a ministry of United Methodist Communications, the information service for all things United Methodist.

Supporting the humanitarian response in Ukraine
The General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church is deeply troubled by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the ominous implications it has for escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations. They join many Christian leaders and organizations worldwide in deploring the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, and they ardently pray for a redirection of military action toward diplomatic measures to resolve grievances.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the humanitarian relief arm of Global Ministries, is in communication with partners in the region and actively exploring the coordination of humanitarian response in Ukraine. You can support UMCOR’s international disaster response efforts by writing a check to the Upper New York Conference with either Advance #982450/Ukraine or UMCOR/Ukraine written in the memo line.

UM Global Ministries and UMCOR’s response to COVID-19
Since the early months of 2020, the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) have followed a broad, proactive course in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, reflective of the international guidelines for nonprofit participation in the effort to control and overcome the disease and in line with established denominational policy on the alleviation of suffering.

Global Ministries response through the “Sheltering in Love” Advance and other sources of funding have, to date, enabled the release of over 340 grants totaling $4.5 million to more than 300 partners in 57 countries.

Palestine-Israel Task Force:
We must do something to help Palestinians

Conflict between Jews and Palestinians arose as a tragic choice, occasioned largely by European experiences. Despite decades of hostility, divine impulse calls people of faith to an inclusive human identity. The Palestine-Israel Task Force believes we are called to care about every person in Palestine-Israel: the land between “the River and the Sea.” Peace cannot come for any people alone until it comes for all peoples together.

Father Abraham makes Jews, Palestinians, and Christians “blood brothers and sisters.” All these siblings feel deep connection to the Holy Land.

As Americans, we are also entangled politically and financially. As American Christians, our moral stake is clear: our tax dollars support an unjust structure of domination, which makes life miserable for millions of Palestinians living within the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and in refugee camps outside the land—who have been denied their “right to return” under international law.

Click here to learn more about the injustices and harm the conflict has caused for Palestinians and to learn what you can to do to help prevent our country’s support of the unjust structure of domination.
The UNYAC Media Resource Center is operating on a limited basis for Resource orders. We have a small committee who are dedicating their time and talents to help maintain this valuable resource. We need your help! Click here to read about our changes and how you can help us help you.

NYS HERO Act Update

On March 18, 2022, the NYS Department of Labor updated its NY HERO Act website to confirm the designation of COVID-19 as an airborne infectious disease that presents a serious risk of harm to the public health under the HERO Act ended. Private sector employers are no longer required to implement their workforce safety plans. No more health screens!

While this is great news, there are other obligations the NY HERO Act (NY Labor Law Section 218-b) that remain even when no designation is in effect. These obligations include creating an airborne infectious disease exposure prevention plan, giving a copy of the plan to employees within 30 days after its creation, giving a copy of the plan to any new employees when they are hired, posting the plan in each work site so employees can view it, and updating the plan as necessary.

Any questions about the NYS HERO Act obligations can be addressed to Upper New York Conference Director of Human Resources/Benefits, Susan Latessa at [email protected] or 315-898-2002.
