CELEBRATE

BLACK

HISTORY

MONTH

Black History Month, celebrated in February each year, is a time to recognize the central role African Americans have played in U.S. history and to recognize and celebrate their achievements.

Why Is Black History Celebrated in February?

In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, established Negro History Week to promote the accomplishment and achievements of Black people. He chose the week of February that corresponds with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. The theme of Black History Month this year is Black Health and Wellness.
