May is Building Safety Month, a worldwide campaign presented by the International Code Council, of which the City of Signal Hill is a member. This year’s theme, “Safety for All: Building Codes in Action,” raises awareness about the importance of building codes in ensuring safety in the spaces in which we live, work and learn.

The Building Division of the City of Signal Hill is here to help residents build and maintain their property safely. If you have questions regarding building permits for your property improvement project, please contact 562-989-7348.

New Fireworks Penalties in Effect
Using fireworks is already against the law in Signal Hill. This summer, please be aware that increased fines and penalties are now in effect.

In April, the City adopted an ordinance which imposes fines ranging from $1,000 to $80,000 for possessing, storing, selling, displaying or setting off fireworks in Signal Hill. Additionally, anyone who “hosts” a gathering or other use of illegal fireworks on their property could be held responsible. The “host” does not have to be present during the use of illegal fireworks to be cited. However, if a host immediately notifies the Signal Hill Police Department of illegal fireworks on their property, they will not be held responsible.

Fireworks are harmful to people, pets and property. Please keep our community safe and avoid the risk. For more information on the updated fireworks ordinance, including a list of potential fines and fees, visit our website.

Commemorating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. We honor their contributions to our community past and present. In the early 1900's, before the discovery of oil, Japanese farmers thrived on Signal Hill, growing cucumbers and other produce. They also grew flowers, including zinnias, which is now the official City flower. We will be commemorating this month with special flags at City facilities, plus commemorative displays and events at the Library.
