LUM Tax Assistance - A Successful Season
LUM Tax Program Adapts, Persists & Succeeds
Each year, the LUM Tax Assistance Program offers FREE income tax preparation services for eligible, low-income households and individuals in Tippecanoe County. Due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 resurgence in early 2022, LUM offered both in-person and virtual options for our tax clients. Encouraging statistics from this year are as follows:
  • 309 – Income Tax Returns filed (22 of which were Eldery Tax Credit Returns)
  • $453,000 – Total Refunds ($407,000 in Federal & $46,000 in State)
  • $121,480 – Total Earned Income Credit ($116,000 in Federal & $5,480 in State)
  • $21,578 – Average Adjusted Gross Income

Why the LUM Tax Assistance Program is a vital program, and how it boosts the local economy:
  • Refunds boost our local economy by increasing sales and creating jobs in retail
  • Lower wage workers can't afford to have their tax returns prepared professionally – or have limited access to technology to prepare their own
  • Federal & state support for working families is often offered through tax code
  • If individuals don’t file, significant tax credits will be left unclaimed

LUM is proud of the volunteer Tax Assistance team for making it possible to continue offering this service during the COVID resurgence. They were as follows:
  • In-Person - Connie Decker, Jan Engle, Dan Gukien, Olena Hillberry, Stacey Hosler, Joan Marshall, Mary Kay McCauley, Nina Morgan, Carol Robicheaux, Tricia Sembroski, Ron Smith, and Terry Stewart
  • Virtual - Kathy Hicks, Ai Ai Lau, Patti O'Callaghan, Rob Patrick, Paul Preckel, Bharathi Raghothama, Andrea Schmidt, and Janet Winters

Delta Tau Delta Makes Two Special Donations
Delta Tau Delta Donates & Brings Easter to LUM
Members of the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity volunteer regularly at the LUM Protein Food Pantry in downtown Lafayette and are very helpful.
They recently surprised LUM with two special donations. FIRST, the fraternity members prepared & delivered beautiful Easter baskets filled with treats for each of the students enrolled in the LUM After School Program. The students were thrilled, and the teachers were touched by their kindness and generosity. SECOND, the chapter also made a $616.22 donation to the LUM Good Samaritan Fund. (Pictured L to R: Linda Hicks, LUM Financial Assistance Program director with John Kuchar & Ben Jolkovsky from Delta Tau Delta.)

LUM is fortunate to have such great support from Purdue students and the members of Purdue student organizations and the fraternity/sorority community. Special thanks to the members of the Purdue Delts for these special surprise gifts and for their continued support of LUM. Boiler Up!
