Saturday Seminar June 11

-John the Beloved-

Our next Saturday Seminar will be held at the GEM Conference Center on Saturday, June 11. Dr. Michael Fonseca will lead us to discover more about the unique relationship with John the disciple. The one whom Jesus loved.

Why did John call himself, “one of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved?” Was he being egocentric, placing himself above the other disciples in his description of himself? Interestingly, none of the Synoptic gospels describe John as the Beloved Disciple. It is only in the Gospel of John, that he is described as “the one whom Jesus loved.” Hence, it was a personal and private reference that John was making in assessing his relationship with Jesus. Secondly, nowhere in the Gospel of John, does John refer to himself by name. We do not know the reason why John referred to himself anonymously as “the one whom Jesus loved.” However, John had a special reason for highlighting Jesus’ extraordinary love for him. He was clearly emphasizing Jesus’ love for him rather than his love for Jesus.
