NEWSLETTER
HOUSING OUR NEIGHBORS

In our August newsletter, we bring you great news about some of our HT colleagues, an invite to a DEI panel discussion, an update about Quetzal Gardens in San Jose, and info about our Santa Cruz site visits and staff retreat.

As summer comes to a close, we are proud to share that two of our very own have been recognized for their dedicated work and impact in the affordable housing sector.

Our steadfast board member, Lisa Guiterrez, Senior VP, Director of Business Development at U.S. Bank, is a California Housing Consortium Hall of Fame Award recipient. The award recognizes leaders who are dedicated to advancing affordable housing development, financing, and advocacy.

Lisa will be recognized at the September 7 CHC 2023 Policy Forum. Congratulations, Lisa!

Our CFO and Head of Partnerships and Strategy, Julie Mahowald, is a finalist for the 2023 Bay Area CFO of the Year Award through the Larkin Street Youth Services. With her financial and strategic acumen, and passion for increasing the affordable housing supply in the greater Bay Area, it's no wonder that Julie was nominated.

The event will take place on Thursday, September 28 and you know we’ll be rooting for her!

Murals Finished at Quetzal Gardens!

We are excited to share this update about Quetzal Gardens from our developer partner, Resources for Community Development (RCD).

We’re celebrating the completion of two beautiful murals at Quetzal Gardens! We worked with Local Color SJ, San Jose artist Elba Raquel and SGPA Architecture and Planning to create these colorful murals that compliment and enhance this 100% affordable housing community.

Elba describes her inspiration behind the piece: “Flying without constraint and in harmony with each other, the quetzal bird represents freedom and unity, like the hearts of our East Side San Jose residents. In constant motion and communication, dancing or working, the colorful ESSJ community continues to uplift each other, beyond boundaries, to achieve unexpected heights.”

Quetzal Gardens continues to be a testament to how beautiful affordable housing can be, especially when the vibrancy of a community is able to shine through!

SITE VISITS AND A STAFF RETREAT

As we continue to use transformative housing finance and public and private partnerships to create more equitable and affordable communities, we had the chance to visit Santa Cruz and For the Future Housing's Pacific Station South site, as well as catch up with Novin Development Corp at their 831 Water Street site.

It's great to see the projects moving forward to bring more affordable housing to the South Bay!

Our offsite staff retreat also gave us the chance to take a pause, have some fun, and celebrate our incredible staff!

Teamwork makes the dream work! Here we are all smiles at our staff retreat.

FUN
FACT!

Do you know what city is the first American city to tame inflation thanks to affordable housing?

Its Minneapolis, Minnesota!

"In May, the Twin Cities became the first major metropolitan area to see annual inflation fall below the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. Its 1.8% pace of price increases was the lowest of any region that month. . .That’s largely due to a region wide push to address one of the most intractable issues for both the Fed and American consumers: rising housing costs." - Seattle Times, First American city to tame inflation owes success to affordable housing
