Winners of the Family Fun Raffle Donates Prize to Newcomer Family | |
Visitors to the Mulmur booth at the recent Spring Market had the opportunity to support the NDCC (North Dufferin Community Centre) Renovation project through donations, which also granted them entry into an exciting raffle for a Family Fun Pack.
Richard and Ami Alexander were the lucky recipients and shared their plans to gift the winning basket to a newcomer family they have been assisting through the Compass Newcomers Settlement Team. This act of kindness added an extra layer of warmth and goodwill to the event, highlighting the true spirit of community and support.
The Alexanders became involved with the Compass Newcomers Settlement Team at Compass Community Church in 2015. Since then, the team has assisted in welcoming and supporting eight refugee families from Eritrea, Africa. These families, who have sought asylum in countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, and Israel, have been sponsored by the Compass team and have since begun new lives in Canada. Some have even achieved Canadian citizenship. The group is currently preparing to welcome a family of six with young children and a single male adult. They are in search for a suitable 3+ bedroom rental unit and a small apartment in Orangeville is ongoing, as this location provides the best access to volunteers, public transit, and essential services.
One of the most touching aspects of the Alexanders' involvement has been witnessing the reunification of families who were separated during their escape from Eritrea. The team’s support extends beyond the initial year of settlement, providing ongoing assistance to ensure successful integration into Canadian society. This comprehensive support includes housing, employment, medical assistance, education, language learning, and navigating governmental processes.
The Compass Newcomers Settlement Team comprises dedicated volunteers from Compass Community Church, with locations in Orangeville, Shelburne, and Grand Valley. They have built a community that goes beyond mere assistance, fostering meaningful and caring relationships with the newcomers. Shared meals and celebrations have helped create an extended family atmosphere, enriching the lives of both the volunteers and the newcomers.
Newcomers face numerous challenges, such as accessing services, securing housing and employment, cultural adjustment, and learning a new language. In rural areas like Dufferin County, these challenges are even more pronounced. However, the majority of the families assisted by the team have chosen to stay in Orangeville. They have embraced English learning, pursued employment, and integrated into the community, with children thriving in school, sports, and volunteering.

Attention Homeowners! Keep Your Yards Tidy!
Maintaining a clean and safe yard isn't just about curb appeal—it's about fostering a vibrant and hazard-free community for everyone. Here are some guidelines to help you keep your yard in top shape:
Clean and Free of Hazards: Your yard should be free from any rubbish, debris, or objects that could pose health, fire, or accident hazards to you, your family, or your neighbors.
Regular Mowing: If your property falls within certain categories, it's important to keep your grassy areas well-maintained through regular mowing. This is especially crucial if your property is:
- Within settlement areas outlined in the Township's Official Plan.
- Zoned as "Hamlet Residential," "Highway Commercial," "General Commercial," "Business Park Gateway," "Institutional," "Estate Residential," or "Rural Residential."
- Subject to exception zoning in any of the above zones.
- Less than 2.0 hectares (5 acres) in size and located outside built-up and estate residential areas.
- Less than 4.0 hectares (10 acres) in size and within the Niagara Escarpment Plan Area, including specific yard areas.
By adhering to these guidelines, we not only ensure that our yards remain safe and visually appealing but also contribute to a cleaner, greener environment for all. Let's join hands in creating a beautiful and hazard-free community!
