Collaborative Connection: September 15, 2022
Mental health affects all of us regardless of culture, race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Anxiety disorders, eating disorders, depression, ADHD, addictions, and bipolar disorder are all examples of common, treatable mental health conditions. 20% of American adults and youth ages 13-18 experience mental illness.

Research has found that 46% of people who die by suicide had a known mental health condition. Several other factors may put a person at risk of suicide, including but not limited to:

  • A family history of suicide
  • Substance use: Drugs can create mental highs and lows that worsen suicidal thoughts.
  • Intoxication: Analysis from the CDC indicates around 1 in 5 people who die by suicide had alcohol in their system at the time of death.
  • Access to firearms
  • A serious or chronic medical illness
  • Gender: Although more women than men attempt suicide, men are 4x more likely to die by suicide.
  • A history of trauma or abuse
  • Prolonged stress
  • A recent tragedy or loss

As shown in the graphic above, suicide is a growing epidemic. It is important to remember that for every posted statistic, a human life is associated with that number. Suicide does not discriminate. It affects individuals in all stages of life, causing approximately 123 deaths per day in the United States.

We are all stakeholders in advocacy for mental health and in the fight against suicide. It is important to know that asking for help is okay!

RESOURCES:

*988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network.

  • Veterans: press 1 at the prompt.
  • TTY users: use your preferred relay service or dial 711 then 988.

Please note, the previous 1-800-273-TALK (8255) number will continue to function indefinitely.

Community Resiliency Model B-5
Are you involved in the Birth-5 sector?

Join us for a three hour virtual training on the Community Resiliency Model (CRM)® in partnership with Resilient GA and the Department of Early Care and Learning. CRM® Workshops introduce a set of wellness skills designed to help adults and children learn to track their own nervous systems in order to bring the body, mind and spirit back into greater balance, and to encourage people to pass the skills along to family, friends and their wider community. CRM® ’s goal is to help to create “trauma-informed” and “resiliency-focused” communities that share a common understanding of the impact of trauma and chronic stress on the nervous system and how resiliency can be restored or increased using this skills-based approach.
