Mayor's Message

Greetings Bradley Beach-

Summer is here, and we are moving into “high gear” rather quickly!  Our first 2 weekends were a big success on the beach; and the weather forecasts continue to be very favorable.  Next week is our July 4th celebration.  Fireworks on Friday the 5th!   A special treat is the NJ Army National Guard 63rd Army Band on the 3rd at Riley Park- 6:00PM. We have experienced pretty good summer-like weather, and our beaches seem a bit more crowded than usual.

In this newsletter, we will cover:

  • Thanks to Dick Johnson and Bob Rosenberg- Lifeguards for life!
  • Elementary School Graduation- BBES
  • Congressman Pallone, DEP, EPA press conference
  • 319 LaReine disposition update
  • A Juneteenth celebration at the library
  • Mayors Wellness Campaign – First Mayors Walk of the year!
  • Summer Camp has started!
  • A new Bradley Beach Business-  Lynnie Lou Ice Cream- ribbon cutting
  • Julia Rand passing- Thank you Julia-
  • Our Shuttle Service in Bradley Beach is back-  F R E E!!

-Thanks to Dick Johnson and Bob Rosenberg- Lifeguards for life!

Head Lifeguard Dick Johnson and his next in command Bob Rosenberg called it a career after last summer after 54 and 53 years’ service, respectively.  We honored them at the June 12th Council meeting.  What great service to our community!

- Elementary School Graduation- BBES

Another successful year at our Elementary School.  It was a wonderful celebration of our 19 graduates.  The ceremonies included speeches, videos, awards, songs, and of course- presentation of diplomas.  Congratulations to the students!

I got the opportunity after the eighth-grade trip to Washington the week before graduation to address the class at the school and present opportunities for their future.  Chief Jim Arnold and Borough Administrator Meredith DeMarco joined me.  It was fun and hopefully useful to the students.

319 LaReine disposition

At the Council meeting Wednesday, there was finally a vote to put the property up for auction.  The vote was 4-0 to move forward with the sale.  This begins the final process of disposition of the site.  After public notices over the next few weeks, there will be an auction on July 25th.   We will press for a September/ October closing on the property.  Thanks for your patience.  This was a long process; but the appropriate due-diligence was performed, the right amount of resident feedback acquired, and now we are progressing.  Stay tuned.

Congressman Pallone, DEP, EPA press conference

A press conference was held on June 20th at the Fifth Avenue Gazebo.  Our Congressional Representative- the Honorable Frank Pallone, announced important bipartisan legislation and funding for the support of water quality monitoring at our beaches. Officials from the EPA and DEP joined Congressman Pallone.  The announcement was for $258,000 funding for water sampling incorporated in the BEACH act (Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health).  This is a critical step in ensuring  our residents and visitors safe.

-A Juneteenth celebration at the library

A special Juneteenth happening came to the Bradley Beach Library last Tuesday.  The Marel Hidalgo Quartet provided a night of Jazz and Reggie.  It was sensational and very well received by the public.

Bradley Beach 2023 Healthy New Jersey Town- the GOLD!

Our first wellness walk of the year occurred last Sunday; and it was a big success.  Some 60 residents and visitors attended and heard from our Hackensack Meridian partners talked about sensible summer snacking, and  Robyn Flipse, a licensed nutritionist and BB resident, covered fun ways to stay fit at the beach.

Summer Camp has started!

Camp started this week.  We have almost 100 campers, up from 65 last year.  So far, so good!  We have almost 100 campers this year- up from 65 last year.  This is an indication of the quality and popularity of our camp!

- A new Bradley Beach Business-  Lynnie Lou Ice Cream- ribbon cutting

The Newark Avenue beach concession this year has a new vendor- Lynnie Lou Ice Cream.  After an absence of a vendor in this location last year, this is a welcome addition.  We did a ribbon-cutting last Friday and had some great ice cream!

- Julia Sandra Rand passing- Thank you Julia-

Julia Rand, the founder of Bradley Beach Arts, passed away last Friday evening.  after a courageous battle with cancer, which recurred last November after a six-year remission.   The Borough of Bradley Beach, and friends and students far and wide mourn the passing of Julia.   Julia was the Co-founder and 12-year Chair, and the driving force behind the Bradley Beach Arts Council. Her stage, screen and movie accomplishments are too numerous to mention.  She also, wrote, directed, and produced.  At least twice a year here in Bradley Beach, there would be a summer Shakespeare event on the promenade and another production in the fall/ winter.  Her last production was Driving Miss Daisey- a fitting final act for Julia.

Her passing leaves an unimaginable void. We extend our condolences to Julia's spouse Jacklyn Schneider and all those who loved Julia. Julia was a few months short of her 86th birthday when she passed.  She was a force of nature.  Rest in peace Julia.

This should complement the restaurant experience in Bradley Beach.

Restaurants have become a defining characteristic of our community- RESTURANT ROW!

I love this community.  I hope we continue to value inclusion and our diversity.  I hope we stay true to our social commitments.   We are in a larger sense a family, and we should always remind ourselves of this important point.
