How Important is Price When Selling? | This week price has been coming up a lot on my coaching calls with sales reps but there was one comment in particular that compelled me to write this article. In a story related to a sale he made last week, a rep said, “I told the guy, ‘Look, you just tell me where the competition is and I’ll cut my price to match it or beat it.’” After instructing him to never utter those words ever again for the rest of his life, he came back with, “Why not? It’s an easy sale every time. All I have to do is make sure I’m the lowest price and I’ll get the sale every time. Besides, this guy told me he buys solely on price so that’s the only way I’ll get the sale.” In the salesperson’s defense, he’s only been in sales for three months. That said, if I had a nickel for every time a sales rep, from newbies to veterans, told me they lost a sale because of price, or they couldn’t compete because of price, or used any other similar type of price excuse for not making a sale, well, I’d have a mountain of nickels. Ins and Outs of Pay Data Reports for Large Employers — Due May 10 | California has had equal pay laws on the books for decades, beginning when the Equal Pay Act went into effect in 1949. In recent years, however, the state has focused greater attention on pay equity issues, passing the Fair Pay Act in 2016, which bolstered Equal Pay Act protections, and enacting a pay data reporting law in 2021 that requires large employers with 100 or more employees to report specific pay and demographic information to the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) each year in an effort to reduce unlawful pay disparities. California’s requirements were similar to pay data reporting required by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In fact, when the law first took effect, covered employers were allowed to submit their federal EEO-1 report to CRD to satisfy their state requirements. This year, however, that’s not the case. Signed in September 2022 and effective this year, SB 1162 revised and expanded the state’s pay data reporting requirements. See notable changes and discussion (click here). Auto Experts Doubt EV Transition Goals | A recent survey showed that over half of auto industry experts are doubtful of achieving a transition to electric vehicles by the 2030s, Car Scoops reports. According to data from ABB Robotics and Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, 59% of almost 600 industry experts that were surveyed confessed that they “doubted that the switch to EVs was possible within the timeframe specified by lawmakers.” Those surveyed were compromised of “experts working directly for carmakers, plus suppliers, engineers and managers employed in the auto industry.” Reasons for doubt stem from concern with battery supply chains, lacking the raw materials needed, and “a lack of grid capacity and charging infrastructure.” See more discussion here. If You're not Thinking About Your Company's AI Strategy, Your Competition Is! | When talking last week with a group of business owners about ChatGPT, I couldn’t help but think back to Nov. 7, 1998. That was the day we got access to the internet at my childhood house in rural Alabama. I only remember the exact date because I remember one of the first things I did was read an article about Michigan State’s upset of No.1 Ohio State in college football. I don’t remember which specific websites I visited. I don’t remember the first email I sent. The only thing I remember was being amazed by the ability to communicate so quickly with people around the world. Five years later, I’d still come across businesses with little to no digital presence that were performing just fine. I actually worked for one in college. When talking about the potential effects of ChatGPT and artificial intelligence on businesses, my mind kept thinking about how long it took many businesses to embrace the internet. Considering the drastic changes it ushered in, the early days of the internet were relatively forgiving for late adopters in many industries. Businesses will have significantly less cushion with AI. The data suggests companies that haven’t yet waded into AI are already behind the eight ball. See more here. Source: The Playbook | |

Loyalty to a Brand, Service or Company has Shifted from Longevity to Performance | Everybody involved in the automotive supply chain earns loyalty one transaction at a time and is subject to delivering perfection. Loyalty. The holy grail of relationships and what businesses work to attain from their customers. During my career, I had countless discussions with customers, suppliers, and industry peers about what it means to be loyal. Merriam-Webster defines loyalty as “Faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product.” These days I hear a lot of discussions about loyalty, or to be more specific, the lack thereof. Not that loyalty is a new topic for debate, but it seems to be a more pronounced concern nowadays. This got me thinking about why this has become a hot topic as of late. See the discussion here.
