A PLACE OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

Rotary Student of the Month

Each month the La Habra Rotary Club and Sonora High School join together to honor one outstanding student for his or her achievements. This month we are proud to announce our Student of the Month is our student leader, Grace Julia Nevis.

Grace is a part of the AP/IB Program with one of the most rigorous course loads.  Grace is a very busy person….she is a member of the varsity volleyball team and varsity wrestling team.  Outside of school she enjoys refereeing little league soccer.  When I asked her about soccer, she stated that most of the kids are either playing bunch ball or picking flowers for their parents.

Grace and I then talked about the attributes of some of her greatest role models.  She stated that her mom was her hero because of how hard she works and how dedicated she is to community and societal causes.  Grace and I also talked about how much she admires Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  Grace admires Justice Ginsburg because of the doors she opened for other women to achieve greatness within our society.  The greatest attribute of a leader is that of respect for yourself and others, according to Grace.  In fact, her favorite quote and a mantra to live by are from Harry Styles’s song entitled “Treat People With Kindness”.  Kindness is something that should guide you with each decision that you make.  When talking with Grace she said that she wanted to thank her friends for pushing her to do her best and take advantage of any leadership opportunity that is available to her.

Although Grace is a Junior she has her sights set on life beyond high school.  She would like to attend Boston University or somewhere in the New England area.  She would like to study politics and law, perhaps majoring in Political Science.  Being a part of ASB for the last couple of years has helped further nurture her political aspirations.

Ms. Virden, Grace's ASB Advisor, says, "Her positive and cheerful personality makes her approachable and easy to work with. She is well-liked by her peers.  Grace understands that leadership is not about a title but about the impact her hard work has on others and creating more leaders, not followers. Her passion to help others and kindness shines through daily in class."

Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, I would like to present to you, Grace Julia Nevis, our Rotary Student of the Month.  #beholdblueandgold #sonorastrong
