Presidents, Policies and the Constitution

Tonight there's a presidential debate, 6pm Pacific time. Watching it and listening thoughtfully will likely give us the most accurate understanding of who said what.

"After listening to an interview of Jeffery Rosen I searched for his book, The Pursuit of Happiness: How Classical Writers on Virtue Inspired the Lives of the Founders and Defined America, to give to a high school graduate who is crazy about history. The book is about respected philosophers of the era who influenced our founding fathers in their work writing our unique constitution.

This search for the book took me on a detour to a museum in Philadelphia, the National Constitution Center. The website is informative, non-partisan, interactive and beautifully done. I learned a lot and could benefit from more visits. Try it. I hope you find it helpful in raising our next generations of citizens.

Have a joyous time getting ready for our upcoming Independence Day, Parmalee

After High School - A variety of post high school options are becoming "socially acceptable." Parents and graduates explore all options.

Living in California gives us access to fresh vegetables and fruit year round, but summertime offers especially tasty bounty. I know I'm preaching to the choir as so many of you either buy organic or have your own gardens. Barry Brownstein, who always thinks for himself, offers a delightful essay, "To Defeat Tyrants, Eat Real Food." It's nice to have a deep thinker affirm our lifestyles.

One of my favorite things about having kids was read-alouds!

Suki Wessling comments!

"MindShift has a few things to say about reading out loud: https://www.kqed.org/.../5-reasons-to-keep-up-read-alouds...

I will add that for gifted kids, another great reason to read aloud after they are able to read on their own is that they may be reading things they will need help processing. Gifted kids can often read well above the average for their age, but that doesn't mean that they are emotionally or academically ready to understand and integrate what they read.

For example, I had a very young student in a class reading To Kill a Mockingbird. I could only hope that the child's parent sat down with the child to talk about their feelings about the sexual violence in that story. It wasn't my role, in a class meant for older kids (which the mother insisted the child was ready for), to offer support in that way. But I was concerned.

If you read aloud with your kids, you can discuss what you read and help them understand, whether it's understanding historical context or figuring out how to deal with complicated emotions."
