Representative Angie Craig - Listening to Businesses

Maureen Scallen Failor, Chamber President, met with Representative Angie Craig and commented, “I had the opportunity to meet with US Representative Angie Craig from Congressional District 2 on Friday, May 6, 2022. Our conversation focused on the health and welfare of our small businesses. Rep. Craig has been meeting with businesses in the district to hear first-hand how they are doing, and recovery from the pandemic to workforce development continues to be top of mind for our businesses.

The Chamber’s responsibility is to continue communicating with our public officials like US Rep. Craig about what is happening with our member businesses and community members. Reach out to me if I can assist with connecting you to any of our Public Officials in Dakota County as we are “The Voice of Business for Dakota County.”

Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund & Bonus Checks

Last week, the Legislature passed and Governor Walz signed the bill to repay the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund and provide bonus checks to Frontline Workers. The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is currently calculating revisions to the UI tax amounts owed by over 130,000 employers and will send employers a letter once the recalculation is complete. Information for employers, including FAQ to help businesses is available at this link: Unemployment tax changes: How they affect you / Employers - Unemployment Insurance Minnesota (mn.gov)

The Minnesota Department of Labor is working on developing an online application system for eligible Frontline Workers to apply for a bonus check and has set-up a website which will be updated as more information is available: Frontline Worker Pay (mn.gov). In addition, there is a link to sign up to receive updates about Frontline Worker Pay.

Legislative Insights

With less than a month to finalize the Legislative session, we heard updates and insights from Representative Heather Edelman, Representative Spencer Igo, Senator Zach Duckworth, and Senator Melissa Lopez Franzen during last week’s Public Affairs Series. They fielded questions related to bonding bills (it is a bonding year), tax relief, surplus allocations, public safety, gambling, education, mental health support, workforce needs, and capital investment. The final breakfast for this year’s Public Affairs Series will conclude on June 3 with “It’s a Wrap” review of the Legislative decisions for this session.
