Happy Friday! As we get into the groove of this new year, we are finding our rhythm and stride. I am proud of our students working so hard while also being so helpful with all of the COVID precautions in place.
The federal government announced the availability of free tests and we encourage families to place your orders! We have more information on how to do so below.
As the weather gets colder, I want to remind families that we do NOT have supervision on our playground until 8:40am for our K-5 students. Please do not drop off students before that time (ECE students must always be signed in at their classroom). We do not let students in the building prior to 8:55am unless the temperature is below 27 degrees, so on chilly days you may not want to drop them off much earlier than bell time. Thank you for your help with this. If your child is in need of a winter coat or accessories, please contact Ali Larson (alison_larson@dpsk12.net).
We have two staffing changes to announce: Corey Hill, who has been our Discovery Link supervisor here at Stedman, has decided to leave Discovery Link which means we will be getting a new supervisor next week. We will share more in next week's newsletter about this transition, but we are looking forward to working with the new partner to continue to improve communication and support from Discovery Link.
It was with sadness this week that we had to inform our 5th Grade students about the departure of Mr. Pete Kuhn. He has decided to step back from teaching to allow him time to focus on himself and his family. We are thankful for his time at Stedman and very much looking forward to having Ms. Brooke Trexler step in to serve as the classroom teacher for the remainder of the year. We feel lucky to have such an experienced teacher here in the building who already knows all of the students to help with this transition.
As we continue to focus on our character trait of Optimism this month, I want share this quote from Nelson Mandela: "Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward." And so onward we move!
Please continue to practice safety out and about, and be sure to alert our office of any exposures or positive test results so we can monitor students as needed. We appreciate each and every one of you!

MLE DAC Meeting
Invite families to join an upcoming virtual Multilingual Education Districtwide Advisory Committee (MLE DAC) meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 26, from 5-6:30 p.m.

**The Multilingual Education District-wide Advisory Committee (MLE DAC) is a monthly meeting where parents whose children speak a language other than English learn about how Denver Public Schools is supporting the success of their children and other Multilingual Learners (MLLs).
The MLE DAC promotes academic partnerships and leadership through interactive sessions that bring together families from across the district to enhance their advocacy skills at home, school and district level. DPS Protocol For Going Remote
As we've received a few questions about the possibility of going remote, we wanted to share this communication from DPS (below). We have planned intentionally (in addition to being very fortunate) and have been able to provide consistent coverage with teachers our students know and trust. We hope to continue being able to do so.
Process for Moving to Temporary Remote Learning
With the onset of COVID-19, Denver Public Schools, like school districts across the country, has experienced a depletion of our guest teacher pool, and a significantly higher-than-average absence rate for teachers and paras due to required quarantine and isolation periods. This has resulted in a deep shortfall of daily guest teachers and threatens the daily operations of schools if we are unable to secure coverage. When there is a staffing gap that cannot be addressed to provide safe in-person learning, temporary remote learning is considered a last resort.
Research continues to show that students’ social-emotional and mental health is best supported with in-person learning, and Denver Public Schools is committed to keeping schools safely open whenever possible.
If a school leader, who knows their school circumstances best, has exhausted all of the possible staffing options to be able to operate a classroom(s) or school building safely, a temporary move of a classroom or group of classrooms to remote learning can be considered. The recommendation to move to remote learning is school-based. This means school leaders can recommend what they believe to be best for their students and school after consultation with and approval from an Operational Superintendent (or Portfolio partner, for Zone schools). The Deputy Superintendent of Schools or Chief of Strategy and Portfolio will then confer with the Superintendent, who will grant final approval for any moves to temporary remote learning or operational closures. Please note that charter schools have the autonomy to determine if and when a classroom or school needs to move to remote learning in partnership and communication with the Portfolio office.
- Priorities considered when making and/or approving a recommendation:
- Safety for students and staff
- Continuation of instruction and social-emotional learning for all students
- Keep buildings open for students to minimize disruption to families’ schedules
Every school has unique structures, staff, supports, and programming that must be taken into account when deciding whether to move to temporary remote learning. There is no formula that is used to determine when remote learning is appropriate; rather, each individual school is evaluated based on their unique circumstances, including number and percentage of staff absences, roles and licensure of absent staff, general school staffing models, and student enrollment and attendance.

With the ever-changing COVID-19 Landscape, I wanted to create a video to share with you about how we're working to keep your children and our staff safe along with what the updated guidance means for you.
Communication can be confusing, so I've tried to capture the important information below. Please note that we will be strictly enforcing mask-wearing and the monitoring of symptoms. Please show grace to our staff if you receive a call home about any of this. With Omicron as contagious as it is, we must do everything possible to keep our school open safely.
- Exposures
- Call our front office if your child has been exposed to an individual with COVID-19 (720-424-3800)

If your child is fully vaccinated: Your child does not need to quarantine but does need to wear a tight-fitting mask at all times for 10 days from the last exposure. Students at school will be monitored and will not be allowed to eat near others during this time.

If your child is not vaccinated: Your child needs to quarantine at home for 5 days from the last exposure. If your child does not develop symptoms, he/she can return to school after 5 days but must wear a tight-fitting mask for another 5 days. Students returning to school will be monitored and will not be allowed to eat near others during this time.
- We highly recommend and encourage testing on Day 5 after the last exposure.
- As always - if you see ANY sign of symptoms, please stay home for the full 10 day quarantine duration.
- Positive Test Results
- Call our front office to alert them of the positive test (720-424-3800)
- Your child must isolate at home for 5 days
- from the onset of symptoms OR
- from the test date if asymptomatic
- Your child can return to school after 5 days if:
- symptoms are dramatically improved
- there has been no fever for 24 hours (without medication)
- they can wear a tight-fitting mask at all times for 5 additional days (they will not be able to eat near others while at school)
- If you choose to test again on day 5 and the result is positive, your child should remain home for the full 10 day isolation and not return to school.
- General Guidance:
- If your child develops any COVID-like symptoms, please keep them home (headache, fever, cough, runny nose, etc.).
- If you test your child due to concerns about COVID, please keep them home until you receive your results.
- Recommended masks: KN95 or surgical masks, tight-fitting
- No parents in the building at this time. Approved volunteers who have completed the DPS Background check and have provided us with their vaccination records are allowed at this time.
- Remote Learning Contingencies
- If your child enters an isolation or quarantine, the first day home will be spent asynchronously using school apps (Lexia, iStation, Dreambox, etc.)
- On the second day, your student can find work available in SeeSaw and/or Google Classroom and the teacher will provide feedback as available
- If a classroom or the whole school goes remote, the first day home will be spent asynchronously using school apps (Lexia, iStation, Dreambox, etc.)
- Remaining days will be spent with Live Instruction through Google Meets while utilizing SeeSaw and/or Google Classroom
We appreciate your help as we navigate all of this together. Stay positive, stay vigilant, and continue to use good judgement out there.

Interested in Volunteering?
(From DPS: On August 2, Mayor Hancock announced a new public health order mandating that all employees,
volunteers, contractors, and others at DPS be vaccinated against COVID-19. Anyone who volunteers in a DPS school is required to go through our volunteer application and background check process with Volunteer Services.
This process will now include a requirement to
demonstrate that the volunteer is vaccinated. Volunteers will submit their vaccination information to the school that they volunteer. If you do not have a volunteer’s record of vaccination information a volunteer will not be able to help in the school until it is completed.)
We are starting to allow parent/guardian volunteers in the building on a limited basis. If you are interested in volunteering this year at Stedman, you must follow these steps:

VISION/HEARING SCREENINGS

Denver Public Schools provides free vision, hearing, and dental screenings for all students in identified grades (Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th).
***However, because of the COVID-19 Pandemic's effects on the universal screening process the past two school years, ALL DPS students (ECE-12th) will have the opportunity to receive screening the school year of 2021-2022.
The screenings are NOT an assessment or an evaluation and do NOT replace professional exams. Mass screening is considered best practice to identify students who may be at risk for health concerns affecting the student’s ability to learn, and who may need extra support to reach academic benchmarks.
Your student will receive screenings in the following areas:
Vision, Hearing, and Dental. Resources are available for DPS enrolled students.
You must notify your school nurse directly should you wish to REFUSE/OPT OUT of any of the free screenings for your student.
The health screening components of vision and hearing will be completed at your child’s school on:
Dates: April 11th and 12th
Please contact your school nurse for any questions or concerns about the health screenings. Parents/guardians of students who were absent or who did not have optimal hearing, vision or dental screening results will be notified in writing regarding the results.

Children age 5 years and older can get a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccines are the strongest layer of protection we can offer children against COVID-19. This fall, COVID-19 rates have been higher in school-aged children than adults. While fewer children get severely ill with COVID-19 than adults, they still can get sick with the virus and spread it to other people. Some get sick enough to need hospitalization. Free Meal Delivery Available to Youth 18 and Under
Colorado Food Cluster will provide free, nutritious, weekly delivery of 7 meals & snacks, including milk and fruit. The meals are chef-cooked and are ready to heat in the microwave. Any youth 18 years and younger are eligible, and families can enroll multiple students in each household.

CDPHE recently announced the Rapid-At-Home program in which they will ship free rapid antigen tests directly to homes. Students, families, and educators can enroll in the program here. A couple of important notes on the program:
- Due to significant interest, there appears to be several week delay in initial shipments after signing up.

These rapid tests are intended for ongoing screening; a rapid test cannot clear an individual with symptoms to go to school or clear someone from quarantine. Individuals can only be cleared with a PCR test at COVIDCheckColorado or your primary care physician.

**Housing Assistance for Families and Staff**
Department of Housing Stability Emergency Rental Assistance Program- This program can assist households at risk of eviction due directly or indirectly to COVID-19 hardships. We can provide up to 15-months of rental arrears as well as relocation assistance including security deposit and application fee assistance. Any households with language/technology barriers may also call the Colorado Housing Connects hotline (1-844-926-6632) for assistance with their application. While this program only serves Denver residents, the State of Colorado is also running their own Emergency Rental Assistance Program which is serving counties throughout the state.

HOW TO REPORT A LOST OR DAMAGED DEVICE:

Complete Stedman’s Technology Support Form to report a lost or damaged device
- Email Jerri Succo (jerri_succo@dpsk12.org), Stedman’s STR outlining the technology issue. Jerri will communicate the appropriate steps to either repair or replace the device. As a reminder, there is a cost associated with damaged or lost devices (please see below).
- Jerri will connect you with Kait Parsons (kaitlin_parsons@dpsk12.org), Stedman’s secretary, and she will assist guardian’s with payment if there is a cost associated with replacing or repairing your device.
- Kait will coordinate a time to either pick up your repaired or new device.

Clothes To Kids of Denver (CTKD) provides FREE clothing to children and youth who are in need or in crisis. To shop, students must live in Metro Denver, be age 3 - 21 and be enrolled in school (remote or in-person) or working toward a GED.
Our wardrobe includes 5 outfits, 1 coat, 1 pair of shoes, 1 bra (optional) and 5 pairs each of new underwear and new socks. Students are invited to select clothing in a welcoming, store-like setting or can order a wardrobe for contactless curbside pick-up.

We are very excited to have in person shoppers in our store and are taking extra precautions to protect the health and safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff.

For families who would prefer a contactless option, we are continuing to offer wardrobes via Curbside Service. This option enables parents and caregivers to request a wardrobe for any student in need, and our staff will shop on their behalf.
Families wishing to shop in person or request a wardrobe for pick-up should call us at 720-379-4630 or email us at appointment@clothestokidsdenver.org for an appointment. Up-to-date phone hours are on the Shop With Us page of our website.
No Referral Required! No matter how families choose to shop, we have temporarily loosened our referral requirements and are providing wardrobes to anyone who says the young people in their households are in need of our services, no questions asked.

We are now accepting clothing and shoe donations on Fridays and Saturdays only between 9:00 and 3:00. We are in need of the basic wardrobe staples (shorts, pants, tops, shoes, etc.). We still cannot accept "extras" at this time.
Donating is Easy!
Gather your clean and ready-to-wear items. Check our updated Donation Guidelines for ideas. Please sort items by category (girls, boys, young women, young men and shoes) to save time at drop-off.
· When you arrive, pull into our loading zone and wait in your car until any staff members or other donors are at a safe distance.
· Empty your donations into one of our rolling bins located outside of our door.
· Please do not leave donations inside of plastic bags. Place your donations in our bins and take your bags with you to reuse.
