“Happiness is meeting up with old friends after a long time apart…”
Isn’t the above quote the truth! In just a few short months we will finally all be together for the first time since the 2019 IBA Conference. Think about that, who would have thought three years ago as we were leaving the Marriott that it would take that long for us to be together again. We have survived a global pandemic–lost some dear friends to it–and came out the other side. We might have some battle scars, but we have survived nonetheless.
With this in mind, I can absolutely not wait for the 95th Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference with the very appropriate title: Celebrating Togetherness. It is my earnest hope that the conference will inspire you, enthrall you, and allow us to truly have a celebration. When the full schedule comes out in April, I hope you notice that there are more opportunities than usual to simply hang out with old friends and to make new ones. Be sure to go to as many concerts as you can. Wartburg College’s Wind Ensemble, Iowa’s Symphony Band, and UNI’s Jazz One will certainly impress us with their abilities, as will more professional groups like the Dick Bauman Big Band, Bob Washut’s Emeritet, and the Minnesota Symphonic Winds.
Next, don’t forget to check out the line-up of top-notch clinicians who join us from New York to Washington state and Minnesota to Texas. There is a wide variety of subject matter ranging from repertoire to diversity to marching band and for elementary band directors to college and university professors. Finally, you won’t want to miss Dr. Paula Crider’s keynote address as she pays tribute to our profession with “In Praise of Teachers.”
In closing, don’t forget to register for the conference as soon as you are able and be sure to book your hotel rooms soon as the hotels fill up fast. In our April eNews I will give you detailed information about a viable option for those who might only be able to join us virtually. Until then–my old friends–stay safe, stay healthy and I can’t wait for us to celebrate together…soon.
