Proactively Manage Your Stress

Being a student can be stressful!

The stress can sometimes be expected - like when an exam is approaching or a lot is due for class at once. However, stress sneaks up on us too.

Learning how to cope with stress is a skill both students and working professionals need. There is no better time to think creatively about what stress management tips will work for you!

  • Take A Break: Remember what some people do for a mental health break might not work for you so be sure to find your version that accomplishes the same goal.

  • Meditate Your Way: While the meditation you have tried might not work for you - there are many forms out there to try that might be more useful so do not rule it out yet!

  • Explore UConn Resources: There are many in person and virtual services that focus on stress and anxiety in college.

Take A 'Screencation'

Out from behind the glare of a mobile phone, laptop, or tablet, you’re more likely to slow down and live in the moment. Much like a vacation, a 'screencation' is an intentional break from your screens planned for a predetermined amount of time. When you take a screencation—whether you’re lazing at home or retreating to somewhere out in nature—you get a chance to connect with those around you, practice mindfulness, think deeper, and regain your own attention.

Try These 'Screencation' Tips:

  • A book instead of an e-reader.
  • A cookbook instead of your go-to recipes app.
  • A board game, jigsaw, crossword, or Sudoku puzzle.
  • An outdoor walk around your neighborhood, a day hike, a bike ride, or even just sitting outside.

Meditate Your Way

Keep it Simple: Just try breathing in and out while sitting up with your eyes closed for one minute. Pay attention to your focus.

You can do this.
