ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GETS A LOOK AT THE FUTURE
Chamber Economic Development Team Attends Synapse Summit

Synapse is a full-day conference where hundreds of start-ups and entrepreneurs gather at Tampa’s Amalie Arena to not only show off their business ventures but to make new connections and to bounce ideas off similarly inclined minds. Along with the throngs of entrepreneurs, Synapse showcases multiple keynote speakers who tackled topics ranging from Top Trends driving Florida’s Growth, Artificial Intelligence, successfully navigating mental health in the workplace, as well as new opportunities in the growing world of the Metaverse.

Florida is full of dreamers, and it was exciting to see so many in one place with a common goal of breaking barriers and pushing towards a more economically lucrative future.

One of the biggest takeaways for our Economic Development Team is how the online world is a constantly shifting and evolving entity with almost boundless opportunity… but only if you understand it enough to grasp its potential. As we look towards making Gainesville a leader in Artificial Intelligence, it was insightful to learn what experts in the field are saying will be the wave of the future. Discussions surrounding how NFT’s, Cryptocurrency, and the Metaverse will soon if not already be a staple in almost everyone’s online life moving forward was a major focus at Synapse.
We also ran into several Representatives from around the Greater Gainesville Region including Stephanie Bailes from the Cade Museum, event speaker Margaret “Blythe” Karow from Evren Technologies Inc., and Pablo Casilimas from the ONESIXONE Group, to name a few.

We were happy to partner with Enterprise Florida’s Team who also attended and made it a successful and informative summit.

February is Black History Month

In keeping with this year’s theme for Black History Month- Health and Wellness – we are sharing the medical and civic contributions of Dr. James McCune Smith.

Born into slavery in New York City in 1813, as a young man James McCune Smith set his sights on becoming a doctor. He was denied admission to American colleges because he was black, but he was able to attend the University of Glasgow in Scotland, where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and medical degrees by age 24.

When he returned to New York City in 1837, he established his own medical office and pharmacy at 93 West Broadway — making him the first African American doctor with his own practice in the United States. As a physician, he treated both black and white patients, and also served as the chief doctor at the New York City Colored Orphan Asylum. In addition to his medical contributions, Dr. Smith was one of the nation’s leading abolitionists.
