Collect | Third Sunday after the Epiphany

Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed,
but not in despair: persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down,
but not destroyed.” 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

As we continue learning and living in the pandemic situation of Covid-19, we discover that resilience is a virtue that we need to apply also in our relationship with God.

The definition of resilience is associated with the quick capacity to adapt and respond to the unexpected challenges or hardships. When observed more in detail, it is possible to discover that resilience is in fact a component of the faith which recognizes that we are never in control, and everything depends on God alone.

The Bible is full of examples of resilience where things don’t go as expected and the people rapidly need to adapt and change. Think about Joseph and Mary fleeing to Egypt by night to protect baby Jesus, or Peter leaving everything behind to follow Jesus, or Paul’s life at risk numerous times in front of the authorities, or Job from the Old Testament losing everything and passing from wellness to affliction. These examples are a reminder that each story of the Bible has a component of resilience where people trust and obey God.

The faith that allows these people in the Bible to keep going amid difficulties is needed in our day and time. For us Christians, the power to live and adjust to the circumstances of our time is found only in God. Each believer who arrives to this conclusion can experience God’s consolations even in things that are changing fast or where human life is full of questions without answers.

I invite you to continue being a faithful believer, helping, loving, caring for others and especially trusting and obeying God always.

Blessings,
Fr. Fabian

Bendiciones,
Padre Fabian
