What's Hot!:

The "Dirty Dozen" are known as the worst of the worst tax scams that are common threats to taxpayers especially during tax filing season. The IRS issues the "Dirty Dozen" list annually to help individuals, businesses, and tax preparers avoid these tax scams. The IRS just completed the 2023 list. Here is the link to this years list, and article for a quicker review.

Business:

If George Orwell’s novel 1984 made you wonder if Big Brother was here, the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) (31 USC § 5356) should leave no doubt. Passed in 2021 as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, the law will require that businesses file reports with the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The goals include preventing shell corporations and limited liability companies being used for money laundering, cybercrime, fraud, tax evasion, human and drug trafficking, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and financing of terrorism. Except for larger businesses, the name, date of birth, current address, and a unique identification number such as a passport or driver’s licenses of each beneficial owner of a business must be provided. Yes, “Mom and Pop” corporations and companies are included. Registration is required for new businesses beginning January 1, 2024, and existing businesses must comply by January 1, 2025. Click here for more information . Violation of the law carries a civil penalty of $500 per day up to $10,000 and possible imprisonment of up to two years. Get ready.

Insurance:

Ever wonder what is one of the most overlooked but important auto insurance coverages. It’s uninsured/underinsured or UM/UIM motorist coverage! Many motorists have very basic coverage. Illinois and Missouri require limits of only $25,000 for one person injured or killed and $50,000 total per accident. Lots of folks carry only these minimum limits. Because you can’t pick who will be involved in an accident with you, UM/UIM provides coverage for bills, injuries, and fatalities beyond the policy limits of the person causing the accident. Here’s more about mandatory motorist insurance in Illinois and Missouri. Talk with your insurance agent about boosting your UM/UIM coverage. It could well be worth the additional expense.

Firm Fun:

Even at SRNM we take time for some fun.  The NCAA men’s basketball tournament has been challenging this year. Our pool resulted in Jim Rapp’s grandson, Benjamin St. John, the winner.  Will Meckes tied overall but pool rules gave the win to Ben by coming closest to the combined championship scores. This year’s last place loss goes to David Penn. There will always be next year!
