Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland
June 2024

Respect and Kindness
June brings with us so many proud moments: Graduation and PRIDE. Congratulations to all the graduating trainees at BCH. The Oakland group had a tremendous celebration last weekend at Scott’s in Jack London Square.
PRIDE is not only a month-long LGBTQ+ celebration and an SF PRIDE Parade on June 30th but also an affirmation of our organizational values. The “R” is for “Respect” and is my personal favorite of all. With respect comes kindness. At our All-Dean’s Meeting this week, we delved deep into organizational kindness with a beautiful presentation from Mica Estrada, PhD from the School of Nursing, who taught us about counting micro and macro affirmations. See her review article here and go forward with your affirmations.
We also have a meaningful holiday that, as of last year, is now a federal holiday on Wednesday, June 19th- Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865 — months after the Civil War ended and more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved people — Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free 250,000 people still held in bondage.
With respect and kindness,
Kelley

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series | |
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.
