PRESIDENT UPDATE
As the Sabre spring season is coming to an end I wanted to provide an update. First I wanted to give a shout out to the Sabres Girls 14U team. In March, they qualified for the USA Hockey National Tournament where they advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual National Champion team. Congratulations to Coach Mike Campbell and the 14U Girls.

We would like to thank Michael McGinnis, April Twaddell, and Melissa Slimko for their service to the board over the past several years. Your presence will be missed not only by the board but by all of our members. I would like to welcome Desiree Jules, Kevin Geers, Michael Mahon, and Rex Famatid to the board. We are excited for your ideas and contributions to the club moving forward. There were many others that applied for the positions and we thank everyone for their interest.

As we move forward the board and our hockey director are planning for the summer/off season and for the upcoming fall season. We are excited to return to normal.

WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS
REX FAMATID
Rex and his family have been part of the Sabre organization for over 7 years. He and his wife Christy have 2 sons and 1 daughter who are Sabre skaters, Riley (Midget), Drew (Girls 14U), and Parker (12U). Outside of the rink, Rex is an IT Consultant for an IT firm based out of Itasca. Rex has volunteered over the years for various Sabre organization events and Sabre team events and is excited to participate in his next role as part of the Sabre Board.
KEVIN GEERS
Kevin is excited for the opportunity to be a member of the Sabre board. He has been a part of the Sabre family since 1983 and played competitive hockey through high school. He currently teaches in the Business Department at Neuqua Valley High School and coaches boys and girls soccer there. He has two boys who have both grown up playing hockey for the Sabres. The oldest is a first year Midget and the youngest is a first year Bantam. The Sabres were a large part of his childhood and continue to have such a positive influence on his family. Kevin used to help coach on the ice and now is excited to take on a different role to keep this organization as strong as ever. He hopes to see you at the rink!
DESIREE JULES
Desiree has been involved with the Sabres since her son Parker began playing hockey two years ago as a mite. Growing up as a competitive figure skater Desiree knew nothing about hockey and became the team manager to learn more about the organization and to help parents that were just as confused as she was to stay well informed. Desiree was a first time travel manager for 10U NIHL5 this past fall. Managing a team during Covid teaches you how to be a travel agent, an ice scheduler, an accountant, and everything in-between. Desiree is a Supply Chain lead for the world’s largest packaging distributor. If you drink local beer then you can be certain that Aluminum Can made it to the brewery because of Desiree’s work in supply chain, purchasing, and logistics, during the country’s largest Beverage Can shortage.
MIKE MAHON
The Mahon family has been a part of the Sabre Hockey Club for 8 years. Mike and his wife (Heather) have four children ages 20, 17, 13, and 8. They have two boys currently playing for the Sabres: Nathan is a 2008 Bantam and has played CSDHL for the last three seasons, and Sean is a 2013 Mite who just finished his first season in the JSHL. He has helped coach Mites for several seasons, most recently in the JSHL this past season. Mike grew up in Minnesota in the 80s and early 90s playing in the Minnetonka Youth Hockey Association. He has been a youth baseball head coach for 13 years for in-house and travel teams in the Aurora area. He enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking, camping, fishing, and golfing. He holds a bank examiner commission from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) which is a federal agency that regulates banks and insures all deposits in the U.S. banking system. He works as an Assistant Regional Director for the FDIC’s Chicago Regional Office and oversees the risk management examination process of banks in several midwest states.

SABRES UPDATED COVID POLICY
We are excited to be heading in the right direction in efforts to return to "normal". However, precautions still need to be taken to ensure the safety of our skaters. Please check here for our latest Policies and Protocols. Updates include provisions for vaccinated skaters. As always, we will follow all individual rinks policies that we play at, home and away, regardless of vaccination.
DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Director's Note: Spring into Summer

Sabres,

We are approaching the final weeks of this Spring's EDGE Training Program and we're excited to watch the playoff week unfold and crown each level's respective champions! The most recent update to the standings is live on the website here:

We're definitely starting to see some separation in some levels between the teams that seem to be gelling more than the others. For some of our "struggling" teams, no need to worry. You will all make it to playoff week, there's plenty of time to turn it around and rally!

By now, all of the tournament and showcase invitations have been sent out, and we're happy that the vast majority of our EDGE participants got invited to participate in AT LEAST one tournament or Showcase. We understand that some players were afforded an extra opportunity here and there, and the main reason behind that was simply availability vs level of competition.

As was previously stated, our goal is never to send any teams, or even a player for that matter, to a tournament where the level of competition is either way too far above or beneath them. We want our athletes challenged to have to work their hardest, but within a realm of possibility to find success if they do work hard. This can be especially tricky during the spring when it's very tough to gauge what level a specific tournament will be running at. All in all, our athletes have all been very busy this spring with opportunities to challenge themselves to raise their own personal level of play, and the Sabres are definitely building towards a very successful 2021-2022 season.

Regarding the 2021-2022 Fall season, the Sabres have applied for all levels in the Central States Developmental Hockey League (CSDHL). We will also continue entering teams into various metallic levels of the Northern Illinois Hockey League (NIHL), with our Mite Junior Sabres travel program participating in the Chicago United Hockey League (CUHL). We feel this is still the strongest recipe to provide all of our players with a competitively appropriate Tier 2 hockey experience for their stage of development.

Preparing for next fall definitely doesn't stop when the EDGE program commences. We've got the summer months in front of us and sometimes that can be tricky. How much summer hockey is the right amount of hockey? What type of programs should you be looking for in the summer? There is no one size fits all answer to this question.

The Sabres fully agree with USA Hockey's recommendations regarding multi-sport athletes. The growth of non-hockey muscles helps build overall athleticism for both quickness and agility. It’s also important for young athletes to recharge their hockey batteries in the summer. Unstructured outdoor activities are important for them to maintain excitement and avoid burnout as the physical and mental grind can wear on players as they move on through their youth hockey journeys.

As much as nobody should be skating 8 times a week during the summer months, if there is a desire to try and play this game at the highest levels, the days of hanging up the skates until next fall’s tryouts are long gone. Taking a full 2 months off the ice altogether can “set back” a player if they are not at least working to keep themselves in hockey shape and continuing to build their hockey muscles. For our Bantam and Midget players, a strict off ice routine is absolutely essential.

There is endless media available online regarding off season training routines that players can be doing right at home on their own. The Sabres also endorse the following local training companies:

Acceleration Sport Performance

Champion Sports Advantage

Opportunities to get on the ice with the Sabre coaching staff will be plentiful during June and July. August always has a way of getting here quicker than expected with the Blue and Gold training camps and fall tryouts upon us before we know it. Please reach out to myself or some of our trusted members of the hockey committee if you’re in need of any recommendations for on ice training.

SABRE SPOTLIGHT

Coach Kristian Casella is our Sabre coach in the spotlight this month.

My favorite food would have to be pizza or tacos! My favorite place to vacation would have to be Florida! I got involved in hockey when I was about 5 years old and my neighbor decided to try learn to skate and I joined him and ever since then I’ve absolutely loved the game. Something many families may not know is that I actually played most of my youth hockey career for the Sabres organization. I am hoping players will learn that hard work can go a long way and to always push yourself in practice or games. Always challenge yourselves!

SABRES GIRLS PROGRAM
Sabre Girls 14U Compete at Nationals in Colorado

Our 14U Major Girls had a great experience in Nationals last week. They made it to the quarterfinals, but fell short to the National Champions Assabet. The girls had an amazing season and they look forward to next season! Congratulations girls!
