Conferences & Calls
International Association for the Study of Popular Music Canada
(IASPM-CA)/Working In Music Joint Conference
The local arrangements committee, in conversation with organizing committee chair Richard Sutherland, and with input from Heather Sparling (host of last year’s IASPM-CA conference) have decided to move this year’s IASPM-CA/Working In Music joint conference online.

Many factors figured into this decision. We concluded that holding the conference online will be safest in terms of public health and most equitable in terms of accessibility. We cannot predict how the pandemic will be unfolding at that point, we cannot predict which borders will be open or under what conditions people will be able to travel, and we do not want to be in a situation where people who come from outside Canada could become infected and required to quarantine far from home with consequent costs and complications in terms of travel, accommodation, medical care, and so on.

Following the model of last year’s IASPM-CA conference, we will stretch the conference outover additional days, and will not overlap with IASPM-US’s conference. Our plan now is to schedule conference events on the following days: Wednesday May 19, Thursday May 20, Tuesday May 24, and Wednesday May 25. (IASPM-US commences Thursday May 26.)

International Society for Music Education (ISME) News
The world conference is now three months away and we are learning how much extra work there is in the preparation for our first online conference! Thank you to everyone who has registered already and more than half of the invitations have now been accepted. That really helps. This is the second highest number of registrations at this point in ISME world conference planning. The highest was Glasgow 2018 which ended up as ISME's biggest conference ever, with 1600 delegates. The hope was that being online would make the event available to many who would otherwise not be able to find the time of the funds to attend in person and we encourage members to be part of this history-making music education world conference.

Check out the news below!

Registration is here.

Conference website is here.

ISME Online Café video is now available!
The second ISME Online Café was held and the topic was musician health and wellness. Thanks go to Carina Joly and Naomi Underwood for their leadership, and to Sandra Oberoi who manages the project. Huge thanks to all who grabbed a café drink and snack and came along to join in. The video is now available here.

Call for Proposals: Arts Education: A Global Affair
The World Arts Education Alliance is calling for proposals for a peer-reviewed book, entitled Arts Education: A Global Affair, published by Brill of Leiden. The publication will highlight the adaptations that arts educators and researchers have undertaken to successfully adjust to how arts education has changed since the turn of the century. More information at the WAAE website.

Early Bird
Many thanks to the several hundred who have already registered. Organising an online conference pushes much more work into the pre-event phase and it would be most appreciated if you could! The deadline for early bird registrations and to accept your invitation to present has been extended to 1 May. Feedback was that members wanted more time, so more time it is! There can be no further extension.

Conference Awards
Conference awards are still open! There are 100 funded places to attend the World Conference for students, first time attendees and those from Low PPP countries. Why not apply? Why not tell your students or colleagues about this opportunity? This is a very cost effective way to be part of the international music education community to share, learn and network. Go here for more information and to apply.
