Greetings!

"Letters have to pass two tests before they can be classed as good: they must express the personality both of the writer and of the recipient."

Happy September and welcoming of the fall season!

September 1st is World Letter Writing Day, and I invite everyone to write a letter to someone and mail it. There's something very special about receiving a handwritten letter. I have a few friends who still send me handwritten thank you notes, but that number is really dwindling.

My life as a writer began with letters, the first time my parents sent me to sleep away camp. Aside from spending a night or two at my aunt and uncle's house in New York City, it was my first experience away from home.

Before I left, my mother put some stationary inside my trunk and told me I should make sure to write at least once a week. When I opened my trunk, I was excited to find a box of Hallmark pink stationary with flowers inside scented envelopes.

In my book Writing for Bliss, there is an entire section devoted to letter writing. I discuss how this kind of writing can be thought of as an old-fashioned way to express our concerns and get our feelings out. Emails have become the modern letter; however, it's fun to write and mail letters and I invite you to do this for someone you love far away!
