Welcome to Our Kindergarteners

We welcomed our Kindergarten classes this week. Believe it or not, they are the Kings Class of 2035 and are 391 students strong! This is our 3rd largest class in Kings.

We hope our new Kindergarteners have a great year!

Happy Birthday Columbia!

The staff and students at Columbia Intermediate School celebrated a very special birthday this week!

On Wednesday, August 24, students were treated to suckers at lunch, and one CIS family got in on the birthday action by providing ice cream for the entire staff!

Columbia opened in 1997 initially as an elementary school housing 5th & 6th graders. In 2013 they officially became Columbia Intermediate School!

Special thanks to Mrs. Stovall for stepping in for Mr. Knight!

Happy birthday CIS! Watch below for some images from the day.

AP Scores Show KHS Students Improving

Results from Advanced Placement tests from the Spring of 2022 came in over the summer. The scores indicate that our Kings High School students continue to improve, with nearly 79% of students earning a score of three or higher out of a possible five!

Since 2018, these results have increased by over ten percentage points. Kings High School offers 21 advanced placement courses, which provide an opportunity for students to engage in college-level coursework and earn college credit.

Congratulations to our students and staff at KHS for their success!

Kings Operating Levy Information

The Kings Local School District has a 6.4 mill Operating Levy on the November 8, 2022 ballot.

Operating levies generate money for the district’s day-to-day operations, including personnel and services for students. Operating levies generate money for the school based on property within the district. Property owners pay for the levy through property taxes. Property taxes are the biggest source of revenue for the district.

WHY DO WE NEED A LEVY?

We have a declining cash balance in our operating fund, and we are projected to have a negative cash balance by June 2024. The State Funding Formula works to equalize funding and provide additional money to schools and districts that do not have the capacity and wealth to raise revenues locally.

The new state and local cost methodology use both property values and income to determine the state share for each district. Kings has above-average property values and income, so we receive less funding from the state than other districts. In fact, 87% of Ohio schools receive MORE state funding than Kings.

If the levy passes, if will prevent reductions of personalized academic offerings such as AP classes.

Community members are encouraged to visit our Levy FAQ page to learn more. We will continue to add questions to this page as we receive them.

If you would like to learn more about the Operating Levy, please contact Kings Treasurer, Mike Morrow at mmorrow@kingslocal.net

Kings/Hoxworth Blood Drive

It's that time again! The first of two for the 22-23 school year, Kings High School/Jorge Gonzalez Memorial Hoxworth Blood Drive is coming up on Wednesday, September 7 from 10:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The blood donation will take place in the Kings Junior High School Multi-Purpose Room.

For those new to Kings, we lost an incredible teacher, colleague, and friend last October to Covid. His name is Jorge Gonzalez. He was a Kings High School Spanish teacher and very passionate about life-saving blood donation.

Jorge started coordinating Hoxworth Blood Drives in January of 2004 and hosted his last one in September 2021. Under his coordination, the drives collected 1262 units of blood; the potential to save the lives of more than 3786 patients – that’s LEGACY!

Another part of his legacy is the $500 grant KHS received in July from Hoxworth. The grant was provided thanks to the 88 successful blood donations that were made between 08/01/2021 to 05/31/2022. The grant received from Hoxworth will be put in the Jorge Gonzalez Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Let's keep Jorge's legacy alive and thriving! To donate SIGN UP HERE!

We Love Our Teachers!

We asked some of our students, "What would the world be like without teachers?" Watch below to see what they had to say!

Kings Kloset

The Kings Kloset is a volunteer-led, nonprofit clothing center that provides free garments and supplies to those in need within the Kings Local School District. On average, the Kings Kloset serves 30-50 individuals a month.

The Kloset is open the first Saturday of every month from 9:00 -11:00 a.m. beginning on September 10. Donations can be dropped off during the Kings Kloset hours. The Kings Kloset is located on the second floor of the Kings Education Center, 1797 King Avenue, Kings Mills, Ohio 45034.

They have very limited space and are only able to take donations that meet the needs of the families they serve. Please refrain from dropping donations at the Kings Education Center. If you have donations, please email kingskloset@kingslocal.net.

We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us serve the families in our community in the most efficient way.

Free Meals Ending

Free and Reduced Meal Application can now be completed online!

The Kings Local Food Service Department is a member of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs. With this program, these services for a free or reduced meal program are available.

Free or Reduced-priced meals for breakfast and lunch are available to families who believe they may qualify. Factors considered in the application process are household size and total household income.

The deadline to complete an application for Free and Reduced lunch is approaching. We encourage all families to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application so the student’s eligibility can be evaluated based on the program guidelines. Students who do not qualify for Free/Reduced Meals will be charged full price for purchasing meals.

Digital Flyers

In an effort to be "green," the District does not send paper flyers home. We use a platform called Peachjar that houses flyers of community programs and resources.

Parents receive approved flyers via email, and they are posted on our digital flyerboard for easy retrieval. Any organization can distribute information to our community by creating an account!

The Kings Local School District is in need of full and part-time employees.

The following positions are open:

  • Childcare Workers for Kings Kids Before and After School
  • Bus Drivers
  • Cooks, Cashiers, & Food Service Floaters
  • Substitute Teachers & Aides

If you know anyone who might be interested in the following, please ask them to apply online through our website.

Free Books for Children Birth to Age 5

The Ohio Governor's Imagination Library is a program that provides a free book each month for children from birth to age 5. Through a partnership with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, the program promotes literacy for children starting at birth.

Research has shown that a child with 25 books in their home completes an average of two additional years of schooling compared to their peers without books in their home. The goal of the program is that every kindergartner begins school with 60 books in their home.

Because of the efforts of the Warren County Imagination Library, for the 2022 - 2023 school year, about 1400 children will enter Warren County kindergarten classes with at least one year of reading experience. So far, the Warren County Imagination Library has served over 11,000 eligible children in Warren County. There are currently 7,337 active readers or 58.2% of the eligible children between birth and turning five and they have graduated 3,365 children from the free program.
