THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT

Luke 16:19-31

The Rich Man and Lazarus

"What Needs Are Right At our Gate?"

RRCC.jpg
sabbatical 2022.jpeg

From the Pastor

The Guiding Board has approved a three-month sabbatical for me, and the time frame is June 6 to September 6. My letter of call to RRCC includes eligibility for a three-month sabbatical after five years of continued service. In January of 2021, I became eligible, but delayed plans due to the ongoing pandemic. I feel that God is urging me to delay no longer, and I believe that my heart, soul, mind, and strength will all benefit from an extended time of rest and renewal.

What is the purpose of a sabbatical, and why do ministers take them?

"...Sabbath rest has become a lost concept in modern life. Current technology and multi-tasking have inhibited the ability to balance periods of work and rest. Many faithful people feel that they must work ever longer and harder even though this is contrary not only to the wisdom of biblical teachings but to all we know about learning, productivity and creativity. ...God’s people today need to re-learn the

importance of Sabbath.

Sabbatical/Renewal Leaves have proven to be a blessing to both congregations and pastoral leadership. Sabbath is a central biblical concept. The word “Sabbath” means “stop.” As God rested from the work of creation, God also commands that very creation to stop working and rest.

"Guidelines for Sabbatical/Renewal Leave"

Disciples Home Missions

In my 36 years of serving churches, I have had two previous sabbaticals. The most recent one was 10 years ago. They were both very positive and helpful experiences, and I look forward to this summer very much.

RRCC has formed an excellent Sabbatical Task Force, under the leadership of Tasha York, and they have been meeting for several weeks already. They look forward to sharing details about RRCC's sabbatical plans in the coming weeks.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor Mitch

Updates of COVID Precautions at RRCC

The RRCC “Reopening Task Force” conducted its 17th meeting (beginning May 2020) on Tuesday, May 1st to review the current COVID data in our local area and to discuss the request by a Guiding Board member we consider the possibility of “relaxing the mask requirement” to “masks strongly encouraged.” At the time of the meeting, the Travis County data indicated Stage 3 of the community guidelines; while the Williamson County data was not available online. The RRCC Gathering Guidelines (which were revised and approved by the Guiding Board in November, 2021,) indicate masks will not be required when local data indicates Stage 1 has been reached. The vote of the Reopening Task Force was unanimous in recommending to the Guiding Board we continue to follow the Gathering Guidelines Chart for the time being, requiring masks be worn for inside gatherings. Each of the 11 persons present were asked to share their opinions and 2 additional opinions were shared by members unable to attend the meeting. It was also recommended more communication with the congregation will be helpful as the community continues to go through changes and COVID cases appear to be trending downward. Look for periodic updates in the newsletters and brief announcements during worship!

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

It’s important to occasionally think about all the ways God has blessed us. Even when life hurts, we have many blessings to thank God for. Here’s a way to use the word BLESS to count our blessings (adapted from Alvin Vander Griend, HarvestPrayer.com):

B is for body. Thank God for physical health and the ability to walk, run, play, breathe, and think. Pray for people who can’t enjoy these things.

L is for labor. Praise God for jobs and income that help to meet your needs. Thank God for your employer and the people you work with.

E is for emotions. Thank God for joy, peace, contentment, and more.

S is for social. We are blessed with relationships. Thank God for parents, grandparents, siblings, children, friends, and all relationships in the church.

S is for spiritual. Thank God for all the gifts of salvation in Christ. Praise God for forgiveness, prayer, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and the hope of eternal life.

May each of us learn to say, “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow.”

Prayer:

Lord, what a great God you are! Your blessings overflow to us. May we be a blessing to others.
