Welcome Intern Class 2022
Match Day – March 19, 2022

This talented group of 27 pediatric interns and 1 joint BCH-Oakland-UCSF Child Neurology resident are from 25 different medical schools from every region of the US. Once again our class is rich in diversity, with 52% self-identifying as coming from an underrepresented in medicine background.
As we continue our daily fight toward a more equitable and just healthcare system, recruiting a class so well aligned with our mission is such a win for the community we serve in Oakland.

The Annual Net Promoter Survey about the work experience is due to go out to physicians at UCSF Health and ZSFG on Monday, March 28th. Thank you to all of your teams for updating your rosters for accuracy. The VA has elected to stay with their existing engagement survey and will not be participating in this survey this year. UCSF Health Primary Care is already participating via the STEP survey, and GME and APPs will be surveyed in upcoming weeks.
Your encouragement among your groups to respond honestly to the survey is appreciated. We will provide updates about response rates a couple weeks into the survey with a target date to close by April 18th or when we have sufficient responses.

Congratulations to Lela Bachrach, MD, MS!
Dr. Bachrach in BCH Oakland's Adolescent Medicine department has been awarded a $665,781 grant from the Human Trafficking Victim Assistance (HV) Program of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES).

HEAT: Health Equity Action Time
Focus on Child and Adolescent Mental Health

Dear Colleagues,
We are in the midst of a child and adolescent mental health crisis. Over the past two years, COVID-19 has impacted every aspect of our lives. It has taken the lives of thousands of people, limited social contacts, taken caregivers out of work, and children out of school in-person for months.
The pandemic has affected children and adolescents in unique and profound ways that require attention to their social and emotional well-being and behavioral health.
Visit the event page for more information on speakers.
Recordings and PowerPoints will be posted after each session.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series | |
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and
ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH

From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD
DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine
Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

Summer Student Research Program (SSRP)
The Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) formerly known as CHORI SSRP continues to strive for diversity, equity, and inclusion of students from underserved backgrounds interested in STEM. Over the past two years we pivoted from in-person training to providing virtual and later hybrid programming. We were able to do this while still supporting our students financially and providing a robust didactic and research mentoring experience.
Interested in Mentoring? Student interns for our 2022 program are being selected now, the program will run from June 6 to August 5, 2022. If you have an interest in hosting a student this summer, or if you have any questions regarding our program please reach out to us via e-mail at: ssrp@ucsf.edu
Mark your Calendars: SSRP will hold its 41st Annual Student Research Symposium on Friday, August 5th. Our digital Symposium Book highlights the research performed by our 2021 interns. They presented research findings in a half day symposium held via zoom- and posted on YouTube. We hope you will enjoy a glimpse into their experience and what they were able to accomplish in just 8 short weeks. For a more in depth look at how we created the first all-virtual SSRP, you can see a recent interview with us HERE.

SOM Travel Award for Child, Elder, or Dependent Care
Rolling applications
The School of Medicine's Academic Affairs Office will provide funding through travel awards for child, elder, or dependent care to support School of Medicine faculty members. The intent of these funds is to promote a family-friendly environment so that the expenses associated with childcare, elder care, or dependent care are not an impediment to faculty members' participation in professional conferences.

Extramural The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Science Diversity Leadership Program
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invite applications for the new Science Diversity Leadership program, which will support projects led by excellent biomedical researchers who—through their outreach, mentoring, and teaching—have a record of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their scientific fields.
Each grant recipient will be awarded a total of $1.15 million over five years, with the first two cohorts of grantees selected in 2022 and 2023. Investigators leading the grantees’ projects will use funds to support research programs and outreach, mentoring, and teaching activities. The principal investigator must have started their first independent laboratory no earlier than January 1, 2012.
