Acre Clean-Up 2022: A renewed CBA tradition |

Saturday, April 23rd was a beautiful day for CBA’s Acre Clean-Up! We were so pleased to bring the focus of the clean-up back to the Acre with many of the 37 teams meeting at North Common to scour the Acre for trash, debris, and leaves to pick-up.
The 2022 Acre Clean-Up saw support from partners like A.C.T.I.O.N., and the City of Lowell, and the Lowell Litter Krewe who chose this day to take on an abandoned encampment, picking up 4,700 lbs of trash along the river and near UML’s South Campus. Follow Lowell Litter Krewe on FB to stay updated on upcoming clean-up opportunities.
CBA is very grateful to Dunkin’ for donating donuts, munchkins, and coffee for breakfast, Dracut House of Pizza, Eliu’s Hole-in-the-Wall, and Santoro’s Subs and Pizza for donating pizzas, and Hannaford and Coca-Cola for the waters to feed and hydrate our hard-working volunteers.

¡El sábado 23 de abril fue un hermoso día para la limpieza de Acre de CBA! Nos complació mucho traer el enfoque de la limpieza de nuevo al Acre con muchos de los 37 equipos reunidos en North Common para buscar en el Acre basura, escombros y hojas para recoger.
La limpieza de Acre de 2022 contó con el apoyo de socios como A.C.T.I.O.N., y el Ciudad de Lowell, y el Lowell Litter Krewe eligió este día para tomar un campamento abandonado, recogiendo 4,700 libras de basura a lo largo del río y cerca del campus sur de UML. Siga a Lowell Litter Krewe en FB para mantenerse actualizado sobre las próximas oportunidades de limpieza.

Donuts (and funding priorities) with Delegates |

As part of the Massachusetts Association of Community Development Corporations (MACDC), Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) was pleased to host our annual Donuts with Delegates event on Tuesday, April 12th at our offices in the Acre.
CBA staff, volunteers, and members met with elected officials to discuss which efforts should take priority when addressing the immediate needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crises, and the ingrained structural barriers community members face. The group made an appeal to elected officials to allocate funding for Small Business Relief and Recovery, Emergency Rental Relief, MA Health Homes Initiative, Rental Housing Preservation and Development, and Zero Carbon Renovation Fund.
CBA served breakfast pizza from Espresso Pizza on Central Street, pastry from Kim's Donuts in on Branch Street, and coffee from Nibbana Café at Cardinal O'Connell Parkway.

Como parte de la Asociación de Corporaciones de Desarrollo Comunitario de Massachusetts (MACDC), Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) tuvo el placer de organizar nuestro evento anual Donuts with Delegates el martes 12 de abril en nuestras oficinas en Acre.

CBA is hiring a Youth Program Coordinator |

CBA is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual to come work with youth ages 6-16 at our YES! (Youth Educational Success) program. The ideal candidate will have a background in childcare or education and prepared to serve as a role model for youth members.
This full-time Program Coordinator position will support CBA’s Youth Development Program Manager and is set to start at the end of June/early July. The Program Coordinator will assist with CBA's summer youth programming and YES! Program through the 2022-2023 school year. Check out details about this position on CBA's website.

The Dracut Centre School is getting closer to completion. Our Contractor, Landmark Structures, is early in the process of putting finishes in the future 9-units of veteran-preference housing. These photos show how the apartments have great natural light and will have chalkboards reinstalled in the units as an amenity to the residents and a homage to the building's historic character as a grade-school for Dracut residents.
Maloney Properties is currently accepting applications for the Dracut Centre School’s 9 units. The lottery ends on April 29th and application can be found here.
Interested parties should know:
- 70% of units have a veteran-preference
- Studios, one bedrooms, and two-bedroom available
- All units will go to those who are at or under the income limit (80% AMI, or annual median income)

Lowell Master Plan Steering Committee |

The City of Lowell is seeking residents to serve on the Master Plan Steering Committee. Residents from all backgrounds are invited to submit their resume to become members of the Master Plan Steering Committee.
Committee Members will also recommend strategies for public outreach and engagement, review issues and recommendations concerning other matters as needed. Members will meet at least four times a year for two years to provide input and feedback to the planning team throughout the master planning process.
Cover letters and resumes can be sent to masterplan@lowellma.gov and are due by April 30, 2022. Information on the responsibilities of a steering committee member can be found here.

Training Opportunity: CBA Sewing Skills Classes |

CBA is recruiting participants for the next session of our Sewing Skills Classes!
Master sewing instructor, Diana Coluntino and 6 participants will dig into the basics of sewing safety, tools, and skills. CBA's Latin Empowerment and Advocacy Program Coordinator, Fabiola Rivera, will get to know participants and their desired outcomes to find the best fit when it comes to a job in textiles. These classes are designed for those who speak languages other than English.
Classes will be held at CBA's Walk-In Center at 450 Merrimack Street on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to noon.

You are invited to join CBA's Spring Health Sessions! Free and language-inclusive, CBA is offering more of the health and wellness workshops participants enjoyed last fall!
Join us at the Moody Street Center (517 Moody Street) starting on Wednesday, May 4th to learn about simple ways to take care of your body and prevent chronic illness (such as heart disease and diabetes). Each session includes screenings, a fun and healthy activity, healthy snacks, and ends with a raffle.

CBA offers a program to help you prepare for, and get, a stable, well-paying job that could turn into a career.
The Supportive Training and Education Program (STEP) is a guided 3-week career training program. STEP is flexible and supportive, giving you a boost where you need it and offering help along the way. That means 18 months of ongoing support, wrap-around services, and transportation to and from select job sites.

April vacation was busy at the YES! Center. Our members started the week with a post-Easter egg drop and we are happy to report that everyone built a sturdy contraption, and no one’s egg broke! Members continued their STEM Studies later in the week making fluffy slime and learning about polymers that give slime its texture.
The week continued with plenty of outdoor play and work – in the Whiting Street Garden and new garden beds at North Canal on Moody Street. We had an extra special Seasonal Surprise when we found a Fluffle- a group a baby bunnies living in one our garden beds! Members ended the week by participating in the Acre Clean-Up by picking trash in the parks in the North Canal Development.

Our second presenter was Cathy Mercado, who is the Executive Director of Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership and who motivated our participants with energy and determination.

Shopping hours are:
Tuesday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Thursday 9 a.m. – noon

Welcome Spring at Points of Light Lantern Celebration in the Acre |

Ecumenical Plaza between St. Patrick’s Church and Holy Trinity Church
Bring your light to Ecumenical Plaza on Saturday, April 30th to the Points of Light Lantern Celebration. This in-person event is a spring celebration of unity and renewal the brings together the food, music, and traditions of Lowell's diverse cultures.
Community members are invited to design their own lantern at this fun, free, family-friendly event. Your lantern will join hundreds of other floating lanterns in the Western Canal just after sunset. The event starts at 6 p.m. and the complete schedule is available at www.pointsoflightlowell.com
