Dear Friends,

February is known as the month of love. Here at Pickering Manor this love is shown in numerous ways, from our wearing of green for our love of the Eagles, to celebrating members of our staff and all the good work they do for our residents, to wearing red on Valentine’s Day to show our love for those we take care of and work with daily.

If you were to ask anyone in the long-term care field what motivates them to come to work every day and give so much of themselves, they would tell you it’s their love of our residents. Our residents give us so much love back that even the bad days aren’t that bad. A quiet chat with a resident, the giving of a hand massage, or the sharing of memories of bygone days, these are the little things that show the love between staff and residents here at Pickering.

The challenges we face as a senior community have been overwhelming at times, such as Covid-19, staffing challenges, and low census numbers. It is this love of our residents that pushed our staff to keep moving forward and continue to be loving caregivers and support staff. Our staff always made sure the residents still felt the love and security they so richly deserve.

We are also extremely appreciative of our community. As our community, you show your love for Pickering Manor in countless ways. Just to name a few, you supply us with homemade masks and clothing protectors, volunteer in our Pickering neighborhoods, and share your gifts with our residents. Volunteers are vital to the success of Pickering Manor, and we sincerely thank every one of you and would love to welcome new volunteers to share their gifts with us. The other area in which you, the community, have shown your love of Pickering Manor is with your financial giving to our special projects and overall general giving. This generosity is the heartbeat of what allows Pickering Manor to offer or upgrade our programming. The latest example of this support is the renovation of the Manor house at Pickering, Mr. Pickering’s original residence. We raised over $25,000 towards this project. We would like to thank you for all your support and generosity.

As we look forward to the change of seasons and the warmer weather, we look forward to sharing our love of our residents and the continued growth of Pickering Manor to meet their needs. Remember, we cannot do it alone. We all need to work together…staff, community, families…to continue to enrich our residents’ lives here at Pickering Manor.

CRUISING THROUGH THE DECADES: 1960's

The Evolution of Pickering Manor

How it all began! Honoring the bequest of Russell Pickering's estate, plans for Pickering Manor were announced in April of 1961. The Manor would be managed by the Community Welfare Council of Newtown and The First National Bank and Trust Company of Newtown. In 1966, the Community Welfare Council of Newtown became the sole trustee. Learn More about Mr. Pickering...

In 1963, the east wing was built and opened with 10 rooms and 20 beds. Esther Search was the Director of Nursing and later assumed the role of the Administrator.

In 1969, Pickering Manor began the west wing addition. The west wing was built through the generous support from bequests and donations totaling nearly $291,000. The west wing was a two-story structure paralleled to the east wing. This wing also had 10 rooms with 20 beds.
