Letter from Principal Young

Dear OLOL Families,

I have exciting news to share on the enrollment front. We have 178 students enrolled for next year with an additional 7 students that should be enrolled by the end of the week. That should put us at 185 going to May. As of today we will be welcoming 34 new students to OLOL with 21 of those students being first time OLOL families. We also have reached our all-time high in the preschool program.

I am very proud of our OLOL community and we want to make them feel welcomed by the community right now as opposed to the fall. The sooner they get to see what the OLOL community is all about the better it is for everybody. Please save the date of Saturday, May 21st. We invite all existing and new families to the 4:30pm Mass on that day followed by a social out on the playground. We will provide activities for families to participate as a way to get to know each other. A food truck will be on hand so you can grab some dinner as well. We would love to have you there and celebrate the OLOL Catholic School community.

We are also looking for students to take the liturgical parts of Mass (lectors) on May 21. If your child wants to read on the 21st, please let Mr. Young know.

If any new or existing family brings a new family to learn more about OLOL they can enter in a drawing for a new MAC-Pro computer. We are closing in on Fr. Jim’s goal of 200 students. This would be an excellent opportunity to bring a family to see our school. Please see details regarding this event in the newsletter below.

Thank you to all that joined us for Trivia Night this past Friday. I heard lots of laughing and seeing people enjoying themselves; just like always. Your dedication to our school helped raise approximately $5,000 for OLOL. A big thank you to Katie VerBoort for chairing this wonderful event.

“Joy, with peace, is the sister of charity. Serve the Lord with laughter” - St. Padre Pio

News from the Library

Children’s Book Week is May 2-8.

We are inviting  the students to dress as their favorite book character on Monday, May 2, to kick off the week.

On Friday, May 6, we will be sponsoring a book swap. Students can bring up to 3 books they no longer want from home to the library starting Friday, April 29.  Children who bring books will be able to choose books from the book swap tables on Friday, May 6.

For example, if your child brings 3 books, they can select 3 books.  Please put the books your child is bringing to school into a bag with your child’s full name and grade.

OLOL Facebook Page (Parents)

A group of parents have created a Facebook group for OLOL parents. It is called OLOL Catholic School DePere - Parents.

It is a private Facebook group and is being administered by parents. You will need to be approved to join it, as an OLOL parent.

The hope is that parents can use this page as a way to ask some simple questions quickly, share pictures and things going on at school.

If you have questions or concerns about school, please contact OLOL staff and administration; not this Facebook page. A priority of Fr. Jim's Lourdes 200 is building a strong community and this Facebook page is geared toward that goal.

OLOL staff will continue to maintain the OLOL School Facebook page. We ask that you continue to follow and like the school Facebook page.

If you have any questions please contact the school office.

Computer Science for All (CSforAll)

Problem Solving

Teamwork

Troubleshooting

Communication

Planning

These skills and more are the necessary components of computer science and STEM

(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and are used throughout the curriculum at all grade levels.

In middle school science, a problem to solve was - Will a ramp make work easier?

During 6th grade Science class with Mrs. Johnson, that is what the students had to figure out.  Students measure the force needed to lift a book straight up and how much force was needed to lift the book up a ramp.

What did they find out? A ramp will make work easier.

Math, Reading, Science

and Language Arts

Throughout the school year, the students are working hard to learn in many subject areas throughout the school day. Sometimes these skills require use of a textbook, technology or hands-on activities with instruction and guidance from their various teachers.

In addition, students learn from experiences with family and friends.

We are currently in week 2 of MAP testing where the students utilize all their knowledge/experiences in taking various NWEA MAP tests.

The students (and teachers) look forward to seeing the 'growth' they have experienced during the school year.

Keep up the good work students!e p
