"August: Osage County"
presented by The Potomac Playmakers
Mar 4-6, 2022
Fridays and Saturday @ 8:00 pm; Sundays @ 3:00 pm
Potomac Playmakers Performing Arts Center
17303 W Washington St, Hagerstown, MD 21740-5155, United States
(240) 513-6260
Join The Potomac Playmakers for our 3rd mainstage production "August: Osage County" by Tracy Letts. Winner of a Pulitzer Prize and Tony award in 2008, this is a drama about a dysfunctional family: a vanished father, a pill-popping mother, and three sisters harboring shady little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoman family homestead explodes in a maelstrom of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. Mix in Violet, the drugged-up, scathingly acidic matriarch, and you’ve got a major play that unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family.
This production is presented with permission from Dramatists Play Service.
This show has adult themes, language, and depicts dark themes that are not appropriate for all ages. Viewer Discretion is advised.
*Masks must be worn at all times for this performance regardless of vaccination status*

NEW MANSION HOUSE EXHIBIT CELEBRATES ARTISTIC FELLOWSHIP
“Seeing It Our Way", the new art show for the month of March at the Valley Art Association's Mansion House Art Center & Gallery in Hagerstown's City Park.
| |
Artists just see things differently. They see colors, textures, shadows, shapes and even meaning others might not see. For many artists, creating in the company of other like-minded people is a plus, and that's exactly the theme of the new exhibit at the Mansion House Art Center & Gallery in Hagerstown's City Park.
"Seeing It Our Way" is an exhibition of 50 canvases by 21 artist members of the Valley Art Association (VAA) who participate in one of the VAA's two, longtime weekly in-person gatherings: The Wednesday Group and Inspiration Tuesdays. "Seeing It Our Way" runs March 4-27, 2022 at the VAA's Mansion House Art Center and Gallery in Hagerstown's City Park.
The VAA's Wednesday group, currently chaired by artist Pattie Boyst of Hagerstown, originally started in the 1980s when local artists were meeting at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in City Park, while the Mansion House on the hill had been sitting empty. VAA members proposed to the City that the building be used for a gallery; the City agreed, volunteers cleaned up the Mansion House, and it became the VAA's new home in 1981. One of the original members is still painting with that group.
The Tuesday group, currently chaired by artist Donna Mason of Hagerstown, was started in 2011 by Marjorie Tressler of Waynesboro, who initially envisioned having three venues in the Mansion House: one room for portrait studies of live models, one set up for still lifes, and one set up for artists to work from their own resources.
The Valley Art Association, whose motto is "Art is for Everyone", operates the Mansion House Art Center & Gallery at 480 Highland Avenue in Hagerstown, open to the public Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays, 1-5 p.m. Admission is free.

"Fish Traps in the Potomac River" at Washington County Free Library’s McCauley Lecture Series
Washington County Free Library’s John Clinton Frye Western Maryland Room continues its longtime McCauley Lecture series with a presentation by Don Peterson on the history of Native American fish traps in the Potomac River. The lecture will take place in the Alice Virginia and David W. Fletcher Branch Library’s Community Room on Monday, March 7 at 7 PM.
Don Peterson graduated from Iowa State University, Ames in 1967, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology. He has written 11 books and more than 500 articles on topics as diverse as the stamps and postal history of the Spanish period of the Philippine Islands, fish and wildlife issues, environmental law, Native Americans, and geology. This lecture will be based on his book, Indian Fish Traps in the Potomac River, Brunswick, Maryland: Second Edition (2020).
The book addresses Native American fish traps in the Middle Reach of the Potomac River and provides detailed information on the two fish traps in the immediate Brunswick area. It discusses types of fish traps, when the fish traps were built, what the fish traps caught, and how they were constructed and operated. It is also a story about the first residents of Brunswick, their fish traps, and the importance of the Potomac River in their lives.
This program is free to attend. Please register at washcolibrary.org.

Do you know why Hagerstown is called "Hub City?" The railroad arrived in Western Maryland in 1834, and the nickname “Hub City” stems from the large number of railroads that passed through Hagerstown, which was a principal stop for the Western Maryland, Baltimore and Ohio, Chesapeake and Ohio, Norfolk and Western, and Pennsylvania railroads. On Friday, March 11, 2022 join Randy Anderson for an exploration into Washington County’s railroad history! The featured cocktail will be: The Blue Train! Named for the trains that run through Washington County Maryland, this tangy concoction contains gin, lemon juice, and blue curaçao!
Culture & Cocktails 2022 has been made possible by the generous support of

The Plot:
Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Her husband tries to comfort her, but when he steps away for a moment Elaine screams as she sees (or believes she sees) the body of a dead man in the window across the way. The police are called but find nothing except an empty chair. Elaine’s terror grows as shortly thereafter she sees still another body—this time a woman’s—but by now the police are skeptical and pay no heed to her frantic pleas. Her husband, claiming that Elaine may be on the verge of a breakdown, calls in a lady psychiatrist, who agrees with his suggestion that Elaine should commit herself to a sanitarium for treatment. From this point on, the plot moves quickly and grippingly as those involved—Elaine’s old friend and house guest Blanche; the inquisitive and rather sinister man who lives next door; and the nosy German maid Helga—all contribute to the deepening suspense and mystery of the play as it draws towards its riveting and chilling climax.

Berkeley Arts Council In-Person Art Classes Begin in March
The Berkeley Arts Council is offering three in-person art classes at the Berkeley Art Works in March.
Collage for Self-Discovery s a fun, simple, inexpensive process of creating small 5 X 7 collaged cards to access your inner wisdom and resources for living. Participants will be cutting, pasting, and using the right side of the brain to create images that reflect personal thoughts and feelings.
Mixed Media Journaling is an exciting and unique process to create mixed media art. Participants learn how to express themselves by creating dynamic backgrounds to support various drawings, textures, poems, photos, verses, etc., using wet or dry media. Materials such as magazine cuts, photos, glitter, coffee filters and more are utilized to compose an overall personal visual statement. The enjoyment comes from unleashing one’s imagination and feelings.
Ink and Watercolor Painting is a delightful mixed media approach to creative painting. It combines a freestyle method of sketching with traditional watercolor painting techniques. The process has a light and airy style, which enhances conventional watercolor painting. Participants will be encouraged to ‘“lighten up” and have fun with the whole painting process.
Our class sessions begin March 14. Pre-registration is required - space is limited. For details, materials lists, schedules, class prices, and to register, visit https://berkeleyartswv.org/instruction/. Classes are held at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 N. Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV. Participants will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wear masks. Classes will be set up for distancing. Direct questions via e-mail to instruction@berkeleyartswv.org, or call 304-620-7277 during business hours Wednesday through Friday, 11am - 5pm and Saturday, 11am - 4pm.

The Maryland Theatre hosts
Travis Tritt
Saturday, March 19, 2022, at 7:30 PM
Nearly 30 years after Travis Tritt launched his music career, the Southern rock-influenced artist continues to sell-out shows and stay true and relevant to country music fans across the globe. Continuously performing shows and withholding a heavy appearance schedule, Tritt is proving to be unstoppable. At the same time, his conspicuous lack of a cowboy hat and musical assertiveness set him apart.

The Lettermen
Original Date Friday, March 4, 2022
This show has been postponed to Sunday, June 12, 2022
| |
For more than 50 years, The Lettermen-- Donovan Tea, Bobby Poynton, and Rob Gulack, each of whom are entertainers in their own right—have kept the meaning of harmony alive with their soft, romantic, harmonic blend of music which is as popular with their fans today as it was in 1961 when they recorded their first hit, “The Way You Look Tonight”. Though musical tastes have changed over the years, The Lettermen legacy continues. Harmony will always endure the true test of time—just as The Lettermen have stood the test of time.
