Welsh Nursing Care Record goes from strength to strength


The Welsh Nursing Care Record continues to go from strength to strength having captured more than 3.9million inpatient nursing notes during the last 23 months.


The digital system, which has transformed the way nurses record, store and access patient information, has more than 13,000 monthly users and has seen 3.3million digital risk assessments completed between April 2021 and February 2023.



In terms of risk assessments, more than 1.8 million pain assessments have been completed, with more than 394,000 for skin pressure ulcers and more than 223,000 for falls.

Vaccine system supports 9 million jabs


The DHCW developed Welsh Immunisation System (WIS) will be supporting the Covid-19 Spring booster programme for Wales, starting on April 1st 2023.


The WIS system has administered 8.9million vaccinations since the beginning of the pandemic, and administered 1.1million vaccinations during the 2022 winter programme from September to December. 


Wales is the only part of the UK to have developed a digital vaccine management solution using an existing in-house software team.


The team from DHCW worked with partners, including Welsh Government, Health Boards and Trusts to provide the digital solution for the management, distribution, and reporting of the Covid 19 vaccination programme.

Clinicians to have their say on digital systems across Wales


A new survey will gather feedback from clinicians working for the NHS in Wales on the effectiveness of digital systems currently in use.


The digital systems usability survey launched on March 27th 2023 and is set to be the largest user-led research study of its kind in the country. Clinicians working across the seven health boards in Wales, and frontline staff at Velindre University NHS Trust will be invited to give their views.


The survey will collect feedback at a national level and provide each organisation with a personalised score of their own systems. Bespoke support will be offered so organisations can understand what the results mean and make positive changes.

DHCW at Rewired 2023 


DHCW and the digital health community came together for two days of learning and networking at Digital Health Rewired earlier this month. NHS and social care organisations, private healthcare providers and suppliers were all in attendance at London’s Business Design Centre. 


A comprehensive programme of speakers was the focus of the event, with seven members of DHCW highlighting the role of DHCW in the digital transformation of health and care in Wales.

A spotlight on Research and Innovation in Wales


DHCW’s Associate Director of Information, Intelligence & Research, Rachael Powell and Rachel Gemine, Head of Research and Innovation, were invited to attend BioWales in London on March 14th 2023 as guest speakers to deliver a session on ‘Working with the Welsh NHS’ discussing digital transformation, supporting research and innovation through access to data and the importance of effective partnerships.


Rachael Powell said, “Following publication of DHCW’s Research & Innovation Strategy, it was great to join with colleagues across Wales and potential industry and academic partners to speak about our plans for working collaboratively to enhance the innovation work in Wales through better data and digital opportunities.”
