Mental Health Awareness Month
Alaska Behavioral Health staff will be presenting at lots of community events during the month of May, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month! Come join us for an educational presentation or community fair!
May 1: Alaska Public Media
Meet staff from Alaska Behavioral Health and our program the Cohen Military Family Clinic and the POWER Center for transition age youth. There will be mindfulness and other mental health activities and free food, too!
11 am - 3 pm @ The Nave, 3502 Spenard Road in Anchorage
May 7: Out of the Darkness Walk, Iditapark in Wasilla Join the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Alaska Behavioral Health at this event to raise awareness of the impacts of suicide and raise money for prevention research and education.
Registration at 10, walk starts at 11:00.
May 11: Movement & Mental Health
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Curt Wengel and Tupe A'asa will present on the connections between movement and mental health in this active workshop, presented by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce as part of their "Chamber Academy" series.
This will be a fun interactive presentation so come ready to move!

Cradle to Career Launch Party @ Begich Middle School - Anchorage
Free food, festivities, entertainment, and community resources will abound for the launch of the Cradle to Career Anchorage initiative! Join Alaska Behavioral Health, United Way of Anchorage, and dozens of other organizations for this family-focused event as we celebrate the diversity of our community and our collective resolve to ensure Anchorage kids are safe, healthy, and nurtured at every stage of development.
June 4: Out of the Darkness Walk - Fairbanks
Join the Steven A. Cohen Clinic at Alaska Behavioral Health and the AKBH team at the Fairbanks walk to raise awareness and funding for suicide prevention research and education.
Registration at 10:00, walk at 11:00 at Lathrop High School.

The 9th Annual Alaska Advanced Trauma Training Institute is on! This year's conference features experts from within and outside of Alaska, including:

  • Dr. Jon Ebert, Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
  • Dr. Kathleen Chard, co-developer of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Director of the Trauma Recovery Center and Associate Chief of Staff for Research at the Cincinnati Veteran's Affairs (VA) Medical Center. D
  • Alaskan presenters include Patrick Sidmore, MSW, Alaska Division of Public Health, Meghan Crow, LCSW, Lower Kuskokwim School District, Maressa Jansen, MSW, Juneau School District, Jimael Johnson, MPH, Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority as well as Alaska Behavioral Health staff members Marissa Hansen, LCSW and Suzette O'Donnell, LCSW.

The Trauma Institute is generously supported by the State of Alaska, Division of Behavioral Health, and is offered at no cost to participants. Pre-registration is required.
