Rabbi Silvestri's Round Up
|
There is a famous story told of a man who sent a letter to the Lubavitcher Rebbe wherein it roughly read, “I am depressed. I am lonely. I feel that life is meaningless. I try to pray, but the words don’t come out. I keep mitzvot (commandments) but find no peace of mind. I need the Rebbe’s help.” A few weeks later the man received a reply from the Rebbe. He replied without a single word. Instead, he simply circled the first word of every sentence and sent the letter back.

Historical Visit
Students in Mr. Simon's 3rd grade class learned why Benjamin Franklin is one of the Five Founding Fathers directly from the man himself (well it was really Mr. Simon dressed up as Benjamin Franklin) this week! The class prepared for his visit by recounting their top 10 facts that they knew. Mr. Franklin visited the social studies classroom to discuss life in the 13 colonies and why he is often called "The First American". He read from his biography about his early days as a colonial leader, and answered questions about his life. The class discussed the 13 original colonies and why independence from England was so important for the colonists. The students also learned about the Boston Tea Party and the Stamp Act. The visit brought American history to life and it proved to be a good time for all!

Tzedaka is What We Do!
This week students in Morah Sandy's ECE3-A class learned all about Parshat Re'eh where Moshe told the Jews about the mitzvah of tzedakah, and that it is our obligation to give those less fortunate what they need, possibly food, money and kindness. The students made tzedakah boxes using their fine motor skills to punch circles out of paper and to peel the backing off stickers. They also spelled out the word tzedaka in Hebrew and put the letters on their boxes. Lastly, they practiced doing the mitzvah of tzedaka!
