April 2023
Happy April!

We’re still in the depths of mud season in these parts, but there are snow drops, daffodils beginning to peek out, and even a little bud on our potted calla lily here on Northshire’s 6th floor.

We just hosted an enormously fun and successful event with Kristin Hannah discussing the number 1 bestselling hardcover novel of 2021 The Four Windsnow in paperback–with WAMC Northeast Public Radio’s Joe Donahue. Over 400 people attended, and every one of them left with a smile on their faces. A great Sunday afternoon! And we will be hosting another large, off-site event this month for V.E. Schwab and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue on April 15th in Saratoga Springs.

Besides flowers, April always brings poetry and the memory of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land: “April is the cruellest month, breeding / Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing / Memory and desire, stirring / Dull roots with spring rain” or The Canterbury Tales: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote / The droghte of March hath perced to the roote, / And bathed every veyne in switch licour / Of which vertu engendred is the flour;" Acclaimed local poet and anthologist James Crews will join us to read from his latest Kindness Will Save the World on April 7th, and our Saratoga location will be hosting three poets for a celebration of National Poetry Month on April 19th.

Then on April 22nd, Northshire is partnering with Vermont Works for Women and the Economic Hardship Reporting Program to present the Emmy-award winning author and journalist Alissa Quart for her new book Bootstrapped: Liberating Ourselves from the American Dream, a Northshire staff pick and an important book.

I’m enormously excited to be hosting Dean of the College at Bennington College, media archaeologist Brian Michael Murphy for his amazing book We the Dead–my favorite non-fiction title of last year. I am not engaging in hyperbole when I say there is something fascinating on every single page–from library books gassed with Zyklon B to Nuclear armageddon cosplay, from Depression-era eugenicists and their vaults to space-tourist venture capitalists.

And finally, for me at least, April brings the final preparations for Northshire Bookstore’s literary festival Booktopia on May 5 and 6–the high point of the event year. With nine authors presenting their books, it is the most special book-lovers weekend of the year in Southern Vermont with 100 or so attendees descending upon Manchester to talk with authors and booksellers and discuss the latest books.

Happy Reading,
Dafydd Wood, Event Manager, Manchester

Blue skies, empty land—and enough wide-open space to hide a horrifying secret. A woman with a past, a mysterious trunk, a town on the edge of nowhere, and an “absorbing, powerful” (BuzzFeed) new vision of the American West, from the award-winning author of The Changeling.

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2023: The New York Times, Time, Oprah Daily, Los Angeles Times, Esquire, Essence, Salon, Vulture, Reader’s Digest, The Root, LitHub, Paste, PopSugar, Chicago Review of Books, BookPage, Book Riot, Tordotcom, Crime Reads, Kirkus Reviews

"Acclaimed fiction writer Victor Lavalle should break into the stratosphere with his latest novel Lone Women. It’s 1915; Adelaide Henry has just carefully laid the mutilated bodies of her parents in bed before setting her home on fire and leaving to homestead in Montana. Accompanied by nothing except the noisy contents of a heavy steamer trunk which must not be opened, she falls in with a fascinating group of characters who, like her, are all hiding secrets which will be revealed. Suspenseful and affecting, Lone Women is a startlingly original take on the American frontier combining fantasy, family saga, and the Black experience." — Dafydd Wood

New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune invites you deep into the heart of a peculiar forest and on the extraordinary journey of a family assembled from spare parts.

"Klune does it again, weaving a fantastic story of love and chosen family. This Pinocchio-inspired post-human world is populated by machines - and human Victor - deftly explores personhood, and what makes us who we are, even when you lose your memories. And who can help but love the journey? Especially the dynamics between Rambo, a joyful vacuum, and Nurse Ratched, a nursing machine who delights in threats of violence. I laughed and cried and could not put it down - this is the book I will be recommending to everyone this year!" — Isabel Long
