AEHS Community Member,

As we approach testing next week, it’s a good time to revisit test taking strategies to help our students be successful on the upcoming tests. Many students feel anxiety as the tests approach and feeling prepared can help. There is more that goes into being prepared for the test than just knowing the content. Getting a good night’s sleep, eating breakfast, using breathing techniques, having a plan of attack for the problems and knowing what to expect are all strategies that can help students feel prepared.

As you have probably heard by now, this is the last year the state of Florida will be using these assessments. The tests DO COUNT this year and the state will be grading our school based on our results. We truly want our students to do their very best on the tests and think about how this is an opportunity for them to show us what they have learned this school year. It is important for the students to take these assessments. Our teachers need this information to help them plan instruction and differentiate what they teach to meet the students' needs.

Being prepared and well rested are some of the ways to tackle anxiety on the test day. Knowing some test taking strategies is also helpful. Here are the Top Ten Test Taking Tips from Teacher Vision:

  1. Have a positive attitude
  2. Make a plan and be prepared
  3. Go to bed early the night before
  4. Eat breakfast the morning of the test
  5. Read the instructions carefully
  6. Manage your time and don’t spend too much time on one question
  7. Skip the ones you don’t know right away and come back to them later
  8. Use the process of elimination on the multiple choice questions
  9. Double check you bubbled the correct answer
  10. Go back and check before you turn it in

Remember, preparing for the test includes being physically and mentally ready as well. So, get a good night's sleep (10 hours if you can), eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test and be sure to get to school on time so you aren’t rushing to get to your testing room. Practice breathing techniques to help you stay calm and think positively about the test. Here is a great resource for some breathing exercises you can practice at home: 8 Breathing Exercises

I am confident that our students are prepared for these tests!

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions,
