Florida has the highest concentration of freshwater springs anywhere in the world, and many of these springs are located in north-central Florida along the St. Johns River. These iconic sites have played a central role for Florida's wildlife, culture, and history. This program will be a broad overview of the history and historical uses of Florida springs, from the First Nations to current day. There will be some nostalgia, some interesting facts, and a few funny stories.

Robert A. ("Rob") Mattson recently retired as a Senior Environmental Scientist with the St. Johns River Water Management District. Before that he was a biologist with the Suwannee River Water Management District, for a total of almost 35 years with both agencies. He has a BA in Biology and MS in Zoology from the University of South Florida. In his spare time he enjoys studying maritime and US Naval history, reading, visiting historic sites and ships, participating in naval living history, giving programs, and researching and writing.
