From President Frank H. Wu:
I am pleased to designate Patricia Price as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of Queens College, and to recommend her approval to the Board of Trustees. As has been previously announced, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Elizabeth Field Hendrey will be retiring at the end of this semester after 33 years of extraordinary service to Queens College. Associate Provost Alicia Alvero was ultimately unable to accept the position due to personal reasons. We offer our profound appreciation to Alicia for her exemplary service.
Patricia Price comes to Queens from Baruch College where she has served as Associate Provost and Assistant Vice President for Academic Administration, Faculty Development, and Research since June 2017. Her responsibilities there included coordinating personnel actions across the faculty lifecycle, including the tenure and promotion process, academic leaves, and special appointments; leading faculty professional development; and overseeing contract implementation, faculty workload, three-year adjunct appointments, immigration sponsorship, and system-wide faculty initiatives. As the college’s chief research officer, Patricia oversaw the entirety of the research enterprise and represented Baruch at the system level. Prior to her position at Baruch, Patricia held the position of Dean of Academic Affairs at another CUNY school, Stella and Charles Guttman Community College. There, she was the sole academic dean at a startup educational institution focused on student success. Additionally, she was responsible for oversight of partnerships, community engagement, experiential learning, and budget. Patricia developed initiatives promoting faculty scholarship, recognition, and professional development. She hired many of Guttman’s current faculty and implemented an innovative First Year Sponsor and orientation program.
A native of the Pacific Northwest, Patricia attended the University of Washington, where she earned a BA in Business Administration and an MA and PhD in Geography. For 19 years before her arrival in New York, Patricia was a professor of Geography at Florida International University in Miami.
Patricia has obtained significant federal funding for her research from the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, and has served as a panelist for both organizations. An internationally recognized urban and cultural geographer, Patricia’s scholarship explores Latinx neighborhood dynamics, critical geographies of race and ethnicity, and diversity in higher education. She has authored four books and numerous journal articles.
Patricia brings a wealth of talent, experience, and commitment to urban public higher education as well as excellent knowledge of the CUNY system. She is deeply invested in the public higher education mission of excellence, access, and value. Patricia shared with me, “As a geographer, I understand place as a dynamic entity that is actively produced and reproduced by institutions, and by the people associated with those institutions. CUNY’s relationship to the city of New York is second to none in this regard. Queens College is positioned at the forefront of urban-serving public institutions because of its community's awareness of the opportunities as well as the responsibilities involved in shaping the past, present and future of the great Borough of Queens. I am humbled and excited to join President Wu, his leadership team, and the truly outstanding faculty, staff. and students of Queens College.” I am thrilled to welcome Patricia Price to Queens College.
