Hike for Hospice is an amazing opportunity to come together with friends and family to raise much-needed funds for Hospice Services.
The loss of a loved one is the toughest day in the lives of many. When that day comes, Hospice Services is there to offer support to help you, your family and your friends through that difficult journey. Our Care Companions and Grief Guides invest in meaningful and personal relationships to support over 850 individuals in their homes, at Hospice, and on the Palliative Care unit at Ross Memorial Hospital.
Your sponsorship has a direct impact on friends, family and neighbours going through loss in our shared community.
We look forward to seeing you at our 2023 Hike for Hospice!

Community Care Receives Exemplary Status from Accreditation Canada
|
|
Earlier this year, CCCKL participated in Accreditation Canada’s internationally-recognized program to assess the quality of our services based on high standards of excellence. Organizations are measured by standards that examine all aspects of health care and service delivery – from patient safety and ethics, to staff training and partnering with the community. We are very proud to announce that we received top scores from the Surveyors and we have been accredited with exemplary status until 2027.
The accreditation process strengthens CCCKL’s ability to focus on quality improvement, client and patient safety, and effective governance. We extend deep thanks to our Board of Directors, our Foundation, Team CCCKL, our clients and caregivers, and our community partners for working together to achieve this exemplary status. It is a very meaningful validation of the quality and importance of the work we do every day.

Grief Support with Hospice Services
|
|
Grief is a strong, sometimes overwhelming emotion for people, regardless of whether their sadness stems from the loss of a loved one or from a terminal diagnosis they or someone they love have received. They might find themselves feeling numb and removed from daily life, unable to carry on with regular duties while saddled with their sense of loss.
Grief is the natural reaction to loss. Grief is both a universal and a personal experience, and individual experiences of grief vary and are influenced by the nature of the loss. Our society continues to perpetuate a number of myths about grief and mourning. These myths may seem harmless, but they have been found to become hurdles to healing.
At Community Care, our Hospice Services models our programs after the teachings of Dr. Alan Wolfelt. He has been recognized as one of North America’s leading death educators, authors and grief counselors. Check out the link below to learn more about Dr. Wolfelt’s teaching about the myths of grief.
Hospice Services is here to help. When you reach out to us, you will find a comforting place, specialized programs and highly trained people to help transform hurt into hope. Visit our website or call us at 705-879-4123 to learn more about our Hospice Services.

CEO Column:
A Salute to CCCKL's Past, Present and Future
By: Barb Mildon
|
|
As I prepare to transition my CEO Chair to Ryan Alexander as of April 1 st, I am reflecting on the history of CCCKL and its ongoing role in the City of Kawartha Lakes. CCCKL’s history spans almost 38 years (April 26, 1985) and it has always been inspiring to me that I am only the third CEO to date. I have had the honour of building on the amazing work of Lindsay resident Valmay Barkey who founded CCCKL and served as CEO for over 26 years; and on the work of CEO Cathy Danbrook who led the organization from 2011 to 2018. Each of my predecessors evolved and expanded CCCKL including (but not limited to) establishing the Community Health Centre and Dental Clinic; welcoming Hospice Services and opening the Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Network. Both Valmay and Cathy also worked to advance our new CHC Building project, with Valmay getting the project underway and Cathy securing Ministry approval and the parcel of land across from Ross Memorial Hospital to house the new CHC. It is exciting to see completion of the new building getting closer!
Change and evolution have also been a part of my five years here at CCCKL. From a health system perspective, I have had the privilege of working alongside Veronica Nelson, VP and Chief Operating Officer at Ross Memorial Hospital to co-lead the establishment of the Kawartha Lakes Ontario Health Team (KL-OHT). With the commitment and collaboration of our many KL-OHT partners, and outstanding operational leadership from Executive Director Stephanie MacLaren, the KL-OHT is making a meaningful difference to the residents of CKL in many ways. Examples include:
- supporting remote health care monitoring
- enabling primary care provider offices in the City of Kawartha Lakes to offer online appointment booking to clients
- launching the Wellness Connections Program, which offers health self-assessment and wellness training for older adults to keep them safer at home
- supporting implementation of digital tools such as the Caredove health service navigation platform, which is a search engine for local programs and services
- improving quality and consistency of care through standardized care plans for chronic health conditions.
As OHTs continue their evolution in Ontario, I know that our KL-OHT will continue to bring leadership, vision and commitment to achieve a more integrated and responsive health care system.
Within CCCKL today, change and evolution over the past few years are reflected in more robust engagement with our clients and their caregivers, including demonstrating how we are incorporating their ideas and feedback into our services; upgrading and increasing our use of technology for clinical records, orientation and learning, policy administration, virtual care options and access to services through our website; and strengthening our efforts in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion.
While funding constraints are ever with us, we have focused on initiatives to compensate, recognize, thank and support our employees and volunteers. These vital initiatives reflect the understanding that CCCKL is “powered by people” and I am profoundly grateful for the knowledge, dedication and caring that I see CCCKL team members (volunteers and staff) demonstrate each and every day.
I can honestly say that serving as CCCKL’s CEO has been the most meaningful experience of my 45-year career. I extend deep and lasting thanks, first of all to our clients and caregivers who give us their trust and confidence every day; next to the Board of Directors for CCCKL and the Community Care Foundation, my amazing CCCKL colleagues, and the many volunteers, community partners, donors and elected officials who have provided support, insight and encouragement. I will remain your friend and fan "from away".
Valmay, Cathy and myself – each of us has been a bridge to CCCKL’s future, assuring continuity of CCCKL’s services to the community. It is now my great privilege to turn the CEO role over to Ryan Alexander. With more than 10 years of progressive leadership experience with CCCKL, deep roots in the City of Kawartha Lakes, and a well established reputation for kindness and courage, CCCKL’s future could not be in better hands. Onward you go CCCKL!
Warmly,
Barb
