A VALENTINE'S CARD FOR ALL: PRAYER

Loving God, in a world where hate seems to be the norm and where we are too quick to draw divisive lines in the sand, come and open our hearts. Help us on this day to move past the sentimentality of hearts and roses. May we embrace this day as one to challenge ourselves to love as your Son wanted us to love. May we look at our box of Valentine’s Day cards and see that there are enough love notes for all in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

-Donna Frischknecht Jackson, Editor, Presbyterians Today

ADEN PROGRAM WELCOMES A NEW DIRECTOR

Following a long hiatus due to the pandemic, we are thrilled to announce that SCAPC's Aden Program will soon be returning! For more information about this elder care program, visit our Aden page. Along with this exciting news is the hiring of Heidi Young Batson as the program's new director!

Heidi first moved to New Orleans in 1990, and is delighted to be back in her favorite city after nearly 10 years away. Heidi is a Certified Dementia Care Practitioner through the National Council of Certified Dementia Care Practitioners (NCCDP.org). After a 30 year career in banking management and human resources, she began her second career of senior care in 2018. She served as Social Services Director throughout the pandemic at Cordova Health and Rehab, LLC in Cordova, Alabama - one of 50 facilities with NHS Management, LLC headquartered in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Heidi is grateful for this opportunity to serve as Director. She is looking forward to working with church leaders, the community, and congregation, to continue the program for revitalized and joyful success. Outside of her passion for senior and dementia care, Heidi is also a mixed media collage artist and shares her work at local shops around New Orleans.

ASH WEDNESDAY IMPOSITION OF ASHES & SERVICE

Ash Wednesday worship is important and meaningful for all Christians as this day marks the beginning of the season of Lent: a 40-day period of discipline and prayer during which we prepare to encounter the joyful mysteries of Easter. On February 22, we will hold "Ashes on the Avenue" from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on the curb in front of the Sanctuary. All are invited to receive ashes and participate in spiritual formation practices to remember who we are as mortals and as those who belong to Christ in life and in death. An Ash Wednesday service will be held that evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

YOUTH EVENTS

6TH-12TH GRADERS: There is no Sunday School or youth group this Sunday! Both resume the following Sunday, February 26.

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH: Any interested high schoolers are invited to a senior high Thoth watch event this Sunday, starting at 2 p.m. and ending at 5 p.m.! Students are welcome to come and go, or stay with the group for the entire span. We will be located on Napoleon Avenue, neutral ground side, directly across from Sophie B Wright. If any youth want to walk over to the spot together, rather than try to find us in the crowd, they can meet me out front of my apartment just blocks away from the route at 1:30 (easily accessible for drop off). If you plan on joining, I’d encourage you to text me ahead of time so I know to look out for you, and certainly let me know if you plan on walking over with me at 1:30, so I can provide my apartment address. SCAPC will be providing snacks, drinks, and a safe environment to watch the parade! - Chris Hazlaris, Youth Director

CALL FOR SESSION NOMINATIONS

As a governing body, the Session of St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church needs people who are strong in faith and generous in spirit. Being elected an Elder by the congregation is an opportunity to serve Jesus Christ in leadership. Nominees for the Session Class of 2026, which is a three-year term, must be active church members who participate in worship regularly, support the church’s stewardship campaign financially, and use their time and talents to support the mission of the church. Will you answer the call to service for our thriving church? Or do you know of another member who would be an asset to our Session? You can submit your nomination(s) at scapc.org/nomination. Nominations are due Sunday, February 26.

SCAPC 101

Our next SCAPC 101 will be held on Sunday, March 5, from 9:30-10:15 a.m. in the second floor conference room. This class is designed as an orientation for new members and visitors interested in joining our church...or anyone wishing to learn more about SCAPC! We will talk about our basic beliefs as Presbyterians, the history of SCAPC, and how you can get involved in its ministries. It is also a great way to get to know new and longstanding members alike!

WELCOME, NEW MEMBERS!

Please join us in welcoming new members Claire Armstrong and Parker Biggs who joined the church on Sunday! Claire and Parker moved here from Tulsa, Oklahoma and are engaged to be married at SCAPC in March. Claire works in Human Resources at International Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT), and Parker is an underwriter at Chubb Insurance.

A SPECIAL LITURGIST

During the 10:30 a.m. worship service last Sunday, first grader Jack Wilson served as lay liturgist, leading the congregation in the Call to Worship and Prayer of the Day. Jack, son of Annie and Matthew Wilson, recently completed SCAPC's Worship Workshop 101 in which first graders learned about the various elements of our worship services.
